Cat Health Advice - A Simple Yet Effective Three Step Plan For Your Cat's Health and Longevity

Are you looking for some good, reliable cat health advice? Are you interested in knowing the secrets of keeping a pet cat healthy and happy? Do you want to know how you can improve your cat's health significantly by making small changes in its lifestyle? If you answered 'yes' to any of these questions, make sure you read this article fully. In the next few minutes, you will learn about a simple yet effective three-step plan for cat health and longevity. Now that you are ready, let us get started with the article.

Food

The importance of a well balanced diet for cats simply cannot be stressed enough. A lot of cat owners, feed a home made or raw diet and find that their cat develops a number of issues. The reasons is not that these types of diets are bad, its just that veterinary medicine has identified 40 nutritional components that are essential.

Commercial foods or cat raw food diets, when formulated to balance these 40 nutrients, are very helpful to maintain feline health. Either one is fine as long as the following criteria are met:

- If purchasing a raw diet, make sure the label reads "this food has been proven to be nutritionally complete or adequate for all life stages." If it doesn't specifically say this, it is not a complete diet and should be avoided or only used as a dietary supplement. If you want to make a diet at home, work with a veterinary nutritionist, since in almost all cases, supplements are needed to provide nutritional components not available in most food ingredients.

- If you prefer a commercial diet, make sure that the diet is AAFCO certified, canned, and specifically states that it was "tested and found to be adequate." Preferably the pet food should contain human grade ingredients. If you can't find one, then purchase a veterinary grade cat food such as Science Diet or a premium cat food found in any pet or grocery store. If you are living on a tight budget, buying a cat food in a discount store is fine, as long as it meets the AAFCO certification mentioned.

Water

Cats are reluctant water drinkers. They prefer to get their moisture through food, which is why canned food is preferred to dry. To encourage drinking, use a high quality water source (tap is fine if high quality). Many owners use filtered water. Give your cat what you give to yourself.

Providing an extra water dish in an area of the house your cat likes to rest will also encourage drinking.

Water encourages urination, which is natures way of keeping the urinary tract clean.

Health supplements

Have you ever wondered how animals in the wild stay so healthy? The secret is that they eat certain medicinal herbs to eliminate the toxins and cleanse their system periodically. It recharges their system, improves their metabolism, boosts their immune system, and makes them healthier. What is interesting is that your cat would do the exact same thing if allowed to roam free in the wild. Unfortunately, it does not have access to these herbs. It leads to a toxin buildup in its body, which affects its health adversely.

To avoid this problem, consider giving your cat a regular dose of these medicinal herbs in the form of an herbal supplement. You can choose a high quality herbal supplement that contains powerful herbs like mistletoe, milk thistle, huang qi, cat's claw, and ashwagandha and make it a part of your cat's diet. It is the most effective way to improve your cat's health naturally.

The three-step plan, as you can see, focuses on three important factors - food, water, and supplements. These are the factors that play a major role in your cat's health and longevity. So, understand your cat's needs, know what is beneficial and what is harmful to its health, follow the cat health advice given above, and take good care of your furry friend.

Six Uses For Shredded Paper

Paper shredders are a great way to ensure that no one will able to steal your private information. But what do you do with the paper once it's been run through the machine? This article will list what you can do, ranging from the practical (recycling) to the whimsical (Easter basket filling). Keep reading to discover what you can do with your shredded paper.

1.) Recycle! Obviously, the first thing you can do with your shreds is recycle them. This not only gets the waste out of your house, it ensures that you're doing your part to save the environment. Just be sure to check with your local recycling facility to see if your paper bits can be mixed with other items, such as shredded CD's, credit cards, and floppy disks.

2.) Packing material. This is a great way to re-use your shredded documents, especially if you've been cleaning out your office before a big move. After all, commercial moving supplies are expensive, especially when you consider that they'll probably just be tossed after you're settled in. If you use your shreds, you won't pay anything for packing material, your old documents will be no more, and your fragile items should arrive at their destination without breaking. It's a win-win situation all around.

3.) Pet bedding and kitty litter. If you have pets, they can certainly reap the benefits of your having a shredder. Shreds can be used to line pet cages, especially those belonging to birds, mice, gerbils, hamsters, and other small critters. Rodents love to burrow and they'll love having fresh material in which to do so. You can even use your shreds to line your cat's litter box. (Just be aware that your kitty might not take to the new litter right away. Cats tend to be picky when it comes to their litter boxes especially if the type of litter is suddenly changed.) A word of advice: you should make sure the paper you use is free of shredder oil and toxic ink, especially since rodents love to chew on their bedding. (And cats have been known to lick weird things.) The goal here is to make your furry friends happy, not make them sick.

4.) Gift bags. When it comes time to give that perfect gift, it's always nice to present it in the best way possible. If you're using a gift bag, you can fill up the empty space with bits from your shredder. This would look especially nice if the paper was colorful. You can even use the shreds to pad the box your gift is in. This will not only make your gift look great, it will help you save money since you won't be blowing cash on overpriced products from the greeting card store.

5.) Easter basket filling. If you have kids and they still believe in the Easter bunny, why not run some colorful paper through your shredder and use it to line Easter baskets? It's a great way to both please the little ones and recycle stuff that would other wise go in the garbage.

6.) Confetti. Confetti is another one of those items that comes in very handy at certain times (i.e. weddings), but it's probably also something you don't want to spend a fortune on. If you have a cross-/confetti-cut shredder, it's incredibly easy to make your own confetti. You can even make sure it's the right color and not have to rely on what's available at the store.

These are just a few of the things you can do with shredded paper. If you use your imagination, you're bound to come up with some more ideas. Good luck and happy shredding!

Careers With Animals

So, you want to work with animals, do you? How is your education? You need at least a high school diploma to get into most programs. If you don't have a diploma, but have your GED, you can still do most veterinary work. Even animal grooming needs a certification - and many of these careers need licensing as well. For veterinary college you will need the high school diploma and college - lots of college!

Everyone, no matter what program they pursue, needs to know the business of running a practice. Whether that's a veteinary practice or as a pet groomer, you need to be able to reconcile your checking accounts, make appointments and deal with customers. In most places, a little selling is desirable - up-sell to the next size food or adding on an in-between grooming treatment, for instance. If you can master bookkeeping, so much the better. Perhaps running the office will be in your future.

Different careers with animals include certified trainers, veterinary assistants or technicians, holistic animal practitioners and veterinarians. There are also groomers, petsitters and others who work with animals in various capacities. Did you know that many employees of your local animal shelter need to be certified veterinary technicians?

What about veterinarian itself? What does a veterinarian make? How much education is needed and how hard is it? I heard it's easier to become a human doctor than a veterinarian, is that possible?

How much does the education cost for these careers? Is there anything you can do without going to an expensive school? How much will you make when you complete the program and finally get to go to work? What is the outlook for these careers? Will there still be a position for you in 5 years? What about 10 years? All this and more is covered in this lengthy piece, Careers with Animals.

Morgen Marshall, a cat lover and trainer, invites you into her world of cats. She created a website dedicated to making the relationship between cats and people harmonious and healthy. For the Love of Cats is a place for people facing difficulties in their relationships with cats to come and find the answers they need from someone they can trust.

Ice Breaker Bingo

At the start of a school year, or in an event such as seminar or workshop, it can be helpful for the teacher or organizer to find a fun activity that will facilitate introductions. One such activity that is definitely worth considering is the game of ice breaker bingo. Ice breaker bingo is in reality at least two different games - both variants of the classic game of bingo, and the teacher or organizer should select the most appropriate version of ice breaker bingo depending on the age, confidence level and English-language skills of the players (or students).

1. In both versions of the game, each player is given their own bingo card. The objective of the game is to be the first player to achieve a line of five marked off items on your card, whether that line is horizontal, vertical or diagonal.

2. In the simpler version of ice breaker bingo, the bingo cards contain the names of members of the group - a different name in each square. What happens is the teacher (or organizer) goes around the group asking people to stand up one at a time, telling the others a little bit about themselves, and finish by stating their name. The other players can then mark that name off their card, and the first player to achieve a line of five can call a bingo - however their bingo only counts if they can correctly identify the people corresponding to each of the names in their winning line.

3. In the more complex version of the game, the squares of the bingo cards are printed with descriptions or activities (e.g. "owns a cat", "can play piano", "is a vegetarian"). The players then circulate among themselves trying to find others who match these descriptions, and, when they find a match, they write that person's name in the square. The catch is that each name may only be used once per card, and that of course encourages the players to meet and talk with as many other members of the group as they can.

The Awful Deadly Truth About Steroid Use For Dogs

Is your dog taking steroids for any conditions such as allergies, immune diseases, inflammation from arthritis, stomach and intestinal inflammation, or a host of other problems for which steroids are given to our pets?

Dangerous Side Effects

Are you aware of the awful side effects these drugs can cause, sometimes turning deadly?  The most frequent side effect in dogs is increased thirst. Side effects of anti-inflammatory steroids can be numerous.  In dogs and less often in cats, the most commonly seen side effects include an increase in thirst and appetite, followed by an increase in urine production, and possible weight gain.  Glucocorticoid drugs (steroids with the big name) have an effect the body defenses, such that dogs that are taking these medications at higher doses, especially those on longer-term prescriptions can develop infections more easily. This can lead to conditions such as cystitis (bladder infection), whereby bacteria infect the bladder lining, and the irritation resulting from this can lead to an urge to go that can come on suddenly and leave no time to gracefully exit to the yard for a proper urination.

Other very common side effects of glucocorticoid drugs are panting and weight gain. Less common are side effects on the liver and adrenal glands. The potential for liver and adrenal changes are well-recognized.  Sometimes mood alterations can occur.  These mood changes may make the dog irritable and sometimes can result in a "nice" dog suddenly snapping at its owners.

Long term usage of steroids (usually over a period of months), may induce internal changes to the patients body, resulting in an over-production of the patient's cortisol (patient's own body steroid) production.  This condition, known as Cushing's disease, can necessitate the need for specific treatment. Skin lesions can occur in pets with over-production of cortisol, which can result in hair loss, or red, angry, patches of skin which form scabs over time, or result in a thickening of the skin in the affected area.

Some of the more commonly used drugs of this class include Prednisone, Prednisolone, Medrol, Dexamethasone, and Triamcinolone.

Usdi's Story

We are reminded of the story of Usdi, a beautiful beagle, who lived for only nine years, when she should have lived much longer.  This unfortunate dog was the victim of overuse of steroids. Usdi developed skin allergies.  She was first taken to the vet with this problem at about age 2.  It was a continuing problem for her.  And she was routinely given Vetalog - a steroid - over the next 7 years.  By the time Usdi had passed the point of no return, she was suffering not only from Diabetes, but breathing difficulties, heart disease, unexplained weight gain, probably kidney and liver failure and possibly Cushings disease.

It is not uncommon for steroids to be given for dogs, and in particular skin allergies are often treated with steroids.  The use of steroids should be questioned.  They can, and do, cause a multitude of side effect - including causing Cushing's Disease in dogs, and Diabetes in both humans and dogs.  Steroids are occasionally necessary - but never safe.  There certainly are situations where steroids have saved lives in cases of acute illness of various types.  But they're given out far, far too readily, for all manner of illnesses.

The Safe All Natural Holistic Alternative

Are you aware that nature has provide a safe and natural alternative in a derivative from the Yucca Plant that serves as a Steroid Alternative for pets?

Why subject your pet to harmful steroids when there is a natural organic alternative? There is an outstanding, safe, all natural supplement derived from the Yucca plant, which contains steroidal saponins, nature's most powerful anti-inflammatory agents. Yes to Yucca will promote symptom relief similar to steroid medications with none of the side-effects. Reduces pain as well as bute and aspirin without the gastric side effects! This product is pure concentrated extract, not powdered waste product, and contains 85% bio-available saponins versus 3-7% in other bulk products. For arthritis, bone and joint problems, soft tissue swelling, digestive, bowel problems and colic. Tissue swelling reduces blood flow through injured areas which slows recovery; toxins build up and irritate the liver and kidneys. Yucca cleanses these organs, promotes blood flow and tissue repair, while preventing further degeneration and injured tissues. Reduces the "itch" of allergies, eliminating the need for steroid drug treatments. May reduce inflammation in brain area responsible for seizure activity. Use topically for wound and hot spot treatment.

Careers in Medical Diagnostic Imaging

The need for skilled healthcare workers is increasing in proportion to the needs of our rapidly aging population. The field of diagnostic medical imaging is one area in which the demand currently is high and is expected to remain so for quite some time. It could be quite worthwhile for those thinking of entering the field of allied healthcare to consider a career in medical diagnostic imaging.

Diagnostic imaging is a catch all description that encompasses a number of allied healthcare specialties related to the imaging sciences. The three primary fields we will discuss are radiologic technology, ultrasound technology, and nuclear medicine technology.

Radiologic technology, more commonly known as x-ray technology, is perhaps the largest of diagnostic imaging fields. The radiologic technologist is the individual responsible for taking x-rays in hospital, office, and clinical settings. The training program for an x-ray technologist is usually 2-4 years, and will lead to either a bachelors or associates degree. Programs are offered through colleges and universites, some hospitals, and the military. Once certified, the radiologic technologist can further advance their career options through advanced training in a number of specialty areas. Among them are MRI, Cat Scan, mammography, and interventional radiology.

Nuclear medicine involves the use of radioactive materials within the body to produce images used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Nuclear medicine technologists are responsible for preparation of radioisotopes and operation of the nuclear medicine camera. The majority of nuclear medicine technologists are employed by hospitals, with a smaller number employed by imaging centers and cardiology offices. The training period for this imaging specialty is usually 2-4 years. One year certificate programs are available for those who already possess a degree in a related imaging field.

Ultrasound is the science of producing diagnostic medical images through the use of sound waves. Diagnostic Medical Sonographers, are responsible for the operation of the the equipment to produce these images. The training period for sonographers is usually 2-4 years at colleges and universities, with one year certificate programs available for those with related healthcare training. Sonographers may find employment at hospitals, private offices, and free standing imaging centers. A number of specialty areas are available for sonographers with advanced training. Among them are ob-gyn, cardiology, breast sonography, and neurosonography.

Imaging technologists must successfully complete certification examinations in their related specialties in order to certify their competency and compete in the job market. Many states also have separate licensure requirements for radiologic technologists and nuclear medicine technologists.

CGMP and ISO 13485 Integrated Quality Management System

The ISO 13485 Standard is widely used in the medical device manufacturing industry as a means of establishing compliance with Canadian Medical Device Regulation, European Medical Device Directive and other regulations. Since the majority of medical device manufacturers comply with both 21 CFR 820 QSR and ISO 13485 standards, it is practical to consider establishing an integrated 21 CFR 820 and ISO 13485 Quality Management System (QMS).

Documentation Structure

To establish an integrated QSR and ISO 13485 QMS, an organization may use approaches outlined in the ISO 10013 Standard, Guidelines for Developing Quality Manuals. Among other suggestions, this standard gives an example of a documentation structure that can be used for QSR and ISO 13485 quality management systems. While the standard suggests using a three-level documentation structure, most organizations implement four-level structures to include quality records, as required by both QSR Subpart M - Records and ISO 13485, element 4.2.4. A typical four-level documentation structure includes: Quality Manual, Procedures, Instructions, and Records.

Actually, the documentation structure for an organization should most likely start from the quality policy, as the policy, among other commitments, defines the regulations and standards that a company intends to comply with. If you choose to use this approach, your QMS will have five levels, as shown below:

  1. Quality Policy - level 1

  2. Quality Manual - level 2

  3. Procedures - level 3

  4. Instructions - level 4, and

  5. Records - level 5

Quality Policy

QSR, section 820.20 (a) and ISO 13485, element 5.3 require the establishment of a quality policy. To satisfy these requirements an organization may develop a quality policy that meets requirements of both QSR and ISO 13485 standards. While QSR requires a quality policy to include a commitment to quality and be "...understood, implemented, and maintained at all levels of the organization", ISO 13485 requirements are somewhat broader. Therefore, an organization can adhere to the requirements of ISO 13485 which requires that a quality policy include:

  • A commitment to comply with requirements,

  • A commitment to maintain the effectiveness of the QMS,

  • A framework for establishing and reviewing quality objectives

The organization shall also ensure that the quality policy is:

  • Appropriate for the organization,

  • Communicated and understood within the organization, and

  • Reviewed for continuing suitability

Despite the fact that these requirements appear to be rather simple, many consultants and auditors find that most companies have difficulties with documenting their quality policies by not addressing all the requirements above. It is important to establish a quality policy that, at a minimum, addresses all the requirements above because that quality policy will document a company's commitment to establish a QMS that complies with the given regulations and standards. To demonstrate this point, let's assume that one's quality policy does not require its review "for continuing suitability" or does not include "a framework for establishing and reviewing quality objectives". If there are no "triggers", there is a good chance that these activities will not be performed. Let's take a look at a few examples of quality policies that did not address specified requirements.

"We Practice Continual Improvement to achieve Customer Delight by providing Customer-Centric, Qualitative ... Solutions and Services on time"

Assuming that this quality policy is appropriate to the purpose of the organization and is communicated, it does not appear to contain "a commitment to comply with requirements", a "framework for establishing and reviewing quality objectives", and a commitment to quality. Based on these deficiencies, this policy does not meet our requirements.

The second example of a quality policy states:

"[Company] will earn customer loyalty by providing products, services, and interaction experiences of the highest quality and greatest value. To achieve this result, we will:

  1. Ensure that all of our products comply with relevant safety and regulatory requirements;

  2. Ensure our products meet and/or exceed their published specifications;

  3. Maintain and continually improve the effectiveness of our product and service business management systems;

  4. Continually monitor the quality of our customer interactions, with the intent to improve our customer's total experience;

  5. Establish quality requirements for suppliers, partners, and contractors and hold them accountable to comply

  • Treat customers in accordance with [Company]'s Standards of Business Conduct and Privacy policies."

This quality policy, while apparently very much customer-focused, still does not cover a framework for establishing and reviewing quality objectives and committing to review it for continuing suitability. One of our clients came up with a quality policy that won our "The Worst Quality Policy" Grand Prize. Their quality policy simply stated:

"I improve the Quality of Patient Care and all things [Company name]"

This sorry example of a quality policy has been restated verbatim! (The company name has been omitted). Obviously, this quality policy has met only one requirement: that it has in fact been "established."

Integrated 21 CFR 820- ISO 13485 Quality Manual

While QSR does not specifically require the establishment of a quality manual, Section 820.186 requires a manufacturer to establish a quality system record that: "...shall include or refer to the location of procedures and the documentation of activities required by [the QSR]." This definition very closely resembles requirements for a quality manual for an ISO 13485 compliant QMS. A quality manual is the top-level document of a QMS. There are at least two definitions of what a quality manual for a QMS should be.

ISO 10013, Guidelines for Developing Quality Manuals, element 4.2, gives detailed suggestions for creating a quality manual. It defines a quality manual, among other requirements, as a document that should "consist of, or refer to, the documented quality system procedures intended for [the] planning and administration of activities which [have an] impact on quality". ISO 13485 2003, element 4.2.2 requires a quality manual to include:

  • The scope of the QMS,

  • Details of and justification for any exclusion or non-application,

  • The documented QMS procedures or references to them,

  • A description or interaction between the processes of the QMS; and

  • An outline of the structure of the documentation used in the QMS.

The scope of the QMS is usually located in the corresponding section of the quality manual. It simply states which activities an organization performs within the scope of its certification. For example: "My Company, Inc. designs, manufactures and distributes laser generators for cosmetic surgery applications". If an organization does not perform some of the processes required by ISO 13485, clause 7, such as design or manufacture, this fact, with justification, is documented in the exclusions section of the manual.

After we defined the scope and exclusions, let's describe used processes and references to the corresponding procedures. The easiest way to start this is to transform 21 CFR 820 cGMP and ISO 13485 standards from a set of requirements into your company's commitments to satisfy those requirements. For example: If section 820.5, Quality System, requires that:

"Each manufacturer shall establish and maintain a quality system that is appropriate for the specific medical device(s) designed or manufactured, and that meets the requirements of this part." our manual will state:

"QW Medical, LLC. Has established and maintains a quality management system that is appropriate for the specific medical device(s) designed and manufactured, and that meets the requirements of 21 CFR 820 QSR."

Following this approach by addressing all applicable sections of the QSR and the ISO 13485 standard and referencing supporting procedures, we will establish a manual that can be used to meet requirements of 21 CFR 820 and ISO 13485.

Interaction between the processes may be documented in a number of ways. Some companies choose to define interaction of the top-level processes by using variations of Figure 1 in the ISO 9001 2008 Standard. Combining such a diagram with references to procedures within the manual will, to a particular degree, define interactions between your processes.

The last requirement of the element 4.2.2 of ISO 13485 is to outline the structure of the documentation. Very often companies define their structures as four- or five-level documentation structures in the documentation management section of the manual.

Another important function of a quality manual, very often overlooked, is to be a marketing tool. Well written and professionally published, a quality manual may become a powerful promotional instrument. It can communicate to your potential customers, suppliers and subcontractors that your company is not only a quality-conscious organization, but that it also knows how to document and communicate its commitment to quality and compliance with regulatory requirements.

I always wonder what companies achieve by stamping their quality manuals in bold red capitol letters "CONFIDENTIAL". As far as I am concerned, a quality manual is a company's resume for quality, and if you hide your resume, there is a very good chance that you will never get a job! All Quality Works customers are encouraged to make their quality manuals public!

Naming Your Documents

As you may have noticed, the titles of the documents above are quite short. It is a very typical convention in the medical device manufacturing and other regulated industries to call the second-level documentation "Standard Operating Procedures", known as SOPs. Unless one has a level called "Non-standard Operating Procedures," I really do not see a practical or economical reason for long titles. As long as a short title conveys the idea and leads a user to the right place within the system, let's use it. Quality Works relentlessly promotes this optimization and reduction of waste approach throughout all our publications and consulting work. Let's not make things more complicated than they need to be. For example, one of our customers titled their quality manual as "Quality Management System Quality Manual." I bet, just "Quality Manual" will mean the same for users.

Numbering Your Documents

It is not a specific requirement of 21 CFR 820 QSR or any other regulation or standard to uniquely number a part or a document. It is a worldwide practice in most documentation systems to give a document or a component a number and a title, and to identify its revision level. As long documentation titles that we discussed earlier, use of document numbering formats very often present opportunities for improvement.

Once I worked with a cGMP compliant business of less than 100 people, manufacturing fairly simple surgical instruments. Their documentation system included a few numeration formats depending on the type of a document. One of the procedures had a number 000023-001, which they simply called "twenty three." Drawings were numbered in a format like 987-323-11-02.

Is it acceptable to have long and difficult to read and remember) document numbers? Yes, of course! Is it practical? I do not believe so! In the example above, the procedure number, without the tab, contained six digits. This meant that the system was prepared to handle almost one million documents or part numbers. The company had approximately 150 documents and about the same number of parts and probably would never go beyond doubling those numbers. If nothing else, just reading these numbers with sequential zeros in the front may give one a headache. Surprisingly, this is not the worst case. The business that won our "The Worst Part Number" Grand Prize assigned twelve (!) characters to their part numbers in the alphanumeric format.

If you are designing or manufacturing a sophisticated X-ray, CAT scan or other complex piece of equipment, you will need thousands or even millions of parts and documents. In this case, a long part number format would be needed and will make business sense. Otherwise, save yourself the trouble of writing all those zeros and make your numbering system practical. One of my customers, who won my "The Best Part Number" Grand Prize, numbered their QMS documents as 101, 102, 103, and so on. Short and sweet! Most small- and medium-size companies will benefit from this optimization approach. After all, isn't the part title the best designator? Throughout my entire professional career, I worked only with a couple of companies that did not use document numbers. Their documents were simply identified by unique titles and a two-digit revision level, like Quality Manual 01.

Another debatable issue with part-numbering formats is part number designation. Some management systems associate a part number with a particular part type. For example, 20-xxx indicates a procedure, 30-xxx indicates a drawing, P-xxx indicates a policy-level document, and so on. My experience with a number of medical device manufacturers has convinced me in the benefits of a "no designation" system. Three of our clients' systems that used designation failed. Just recently, one of our clients reported that he ran out of range in his company's part-numbering format. The documentation system allowed for assigning materials through a two-digit designator within the part number. When the system was designed a few years ago, needing more than 99 materials was not considered possible. Unfortunately, company's needs change over time, and just a few years later, the QMS needed more than 99 materials causing the existing part number format to fail.

An alternative approach to numbering parts and documents within your management system is a "no designation" approach. In such a system, documents or parts are given sequential unique numbers within a specified format, regardless of their level, type, material, application or other attributes.

Bringing Halloween Into the Classroom

When Halloween comes kids get excited, very excited. So why not use that excitement to enhance their learning at school? Halloween provides a wonderful opportunity to motivate kids in the classroom.

Halloween activities and Halloween games can be used in different subjects and will get kids performing enthusiastically in math, spelling, writing and reading.

Listed below are a few suggestions for using Halloween as a stimulus at school.

Halloween Math
Predicting Pumpkin Measurements
Introduce a few pumpkins to the classroom and you can get kids, estimating and comparing mass, circumferences, diameters and heights. Use three - five pumpkins and label each with a letter.

Have children record their estimated mass, circumference, diameter and height for each. Children can also record the order of the pumpkins from lightest to heaviest and from smallest circumference to largest. The same can be done for diameter and height. Then have the students measure and record these things. Children can then compare their estimates with the actual measures.

Halloween Counting
Play the old favorite counting game Buzz replacing the word "Buzz" with a Halloween word. Use "Boo" or "Scary" instead. Children count around a circle but replace the number 7, every multiple of 7 and every number containing a digit 7 with the word "Boo". If a child says the number instead of saying "Boo" they are out. This is a challenging game and it requires concentration and a knowledge of multiples. Trying playing it with other digits instead of 7, e.g. 5 or 9.

Halloween Problems and Brain Teasers
Number problems can also be made much more interesting by using Halloween themed characters and situations. Here are a few to try.

Zelda the witch has all of her cats and all of her owls in the house. She has 9 animals in the house and they have 30 legs altogether. How many cats and how many owls does she have?

Frankenstein has 15 shirts in his wardrobe. They are all black or blue. He has 7 more black shirts than blue ones. How many blue shirts does he have?

Dracula, Frankenstein, Mummy, Gilda and Zelda are all having a Halloween party. Each of them has given an invitation to all of the others. How many invitations have been given out?

Halloween Word Activities and Spelling Activities
Letting children play with words is a great way to develop spelling skills and reading skills. Try these games to develop and extend children's spelling skills.

Black Cat
Kids will want to play this game over and over again even though it is really just a version of a spelling bee. You can use Halloween themed words or use words that the children are learning to spell. Children stand in a circle. The teacher gives a word for the children to spell and nominates the person to start. Children give one letter at a time going in a clockwise direction. The child who is after the person who says the last letter says 'Black Cat'. The next child is out and sits down. If a child says a wrong letter, he is out and sits down also. Then the next person gives the correct letter. When the word is completed, the teacher gives the next word and play continues around the circle. The last child standing is the winner. This one is really worth trying as it moves quite quickly and kids really love to play.

Halloween Hangman
Hangman is a popular spelling game that tends to be particularly appropriate for Halloween. Use Halloween themed words or for a more interesting version try using a whole sentence. Simply make up a Halloween sentence, e.g. Ghosts, mummies, witches and zombies chased the frightened children all over the haunted house. Draw the dashes for each letter or each word, leaving spaces between the words. Then you are ready to start. Just fill in all instances of each letter that the children give. A great writing activity is to get the children to write interesting sentences that can be used for the Hangman sentence.

Halloween Sentence Jumble
After children have written their own Halloween sentences as suggested above. Play Sentence Jumble by writing the sentences in a long string with no breaks between the words. This creates an interesting puzzle for children to decipher. They have to rewrite the sentence putting in the breaks. A more advanced version of this is to run the words together and then break the letters up into groups of three, four or five letters. This makes an even more difficult word puzzle. Here is one for you to try.

Jumbled Letters
Another simple Halloween word puzzle is to jumble the letters of Halloween words and have children compete to see who can unjumble them to find all of the words first.

There are many, many different ways to incorporate Halloween into your school program. Hope the ideas above help to make Halloween more fun for your students. Happy Halloween!

Cabling New Commercial Buildings - TIA Standard 568-B.2-10

The cabling infrastructure for a building is designed to last at least 10 years. The 10GBASE-T Ethernet standard is estimated to be deployed in large scale by 2013. The network cabling installed today by cabling companies in new commercial buildings will need to support at a minimum two generations of Ethernet.

In April of 2008 The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) development and intelligence for the information and communications technology (ICT) industries, announced that it has published TIA Standard 568-B.2-10: "Transmission Performance Specifications for 4-Pair 100 Ohm Augmented Category 6 Cabling", a revision of commercial building standards which include Category 6A Cabling.

The TIA/EIA-568-B standards were first published in 2001. They supersede the TIA/EIA-568-A standards set, which are now obsolete. TIA/EIA-568-B.2-10 is a significant step forward in copper cabling. The standard documents how to run 10 Gbps Ethernet on up to 100 meters of twisted pair Category 6A cabling. The standard addresses the newer cable designs that are about 0.30 inches in diameter compared with 0.25 inches for high-end Category 6 and 0.2 inches for Category 5e.

According to TIA The cable itself is designed with larger conductors, tighter twists and more airspace in the core. This provides improved network performance for the next generation 10GBASE-T Ethernet standard via lower losses at high frequencies and better alien crosstalk isolation between cables.

To remain competitive cabling contractors will need to implement the Cat 6A or 10Gbps Ethernet. The cabling contractors must upgrade their certification in order to have the capability to test per the standard.

TIA-568-B.2-10 was formulated under the cognizance of the TIA TR42.7: Telecommunications Copper Cabling Systems Engineering Committee's TR-42.7.
