Tools and Programs Used by Sonographers

The tools and programs used by sonographers are somewhat complex, and they can be very dangerous in the wrong hands because of the radiation that may be involved. This is why specialized training and certification is required before you can become a radiographer, sonographer or ultrasound technician. Students begin using these tools and programs while they are getting their education, and by the time they become certified and begin working in the field they should be more than prepared to handle them correctly with patients present.

Following are some of the most important tools and programs used by sonographers, radiographers or ultrasound technicians:

1. X-Ray Machine: This machine produces images of structures within the body of a patient to diagnose illness and create treatment plans.

2. Contrast Media for X-rays: When medical professionals need to produce high contrast images of the details of viscera, they use these mediums.

3. Ultrasonography Machine: This machine also produces images of the inside of the body.

4. Computer Axial Tomography Scan (also known as a CT scan or CAT scan): This is another machine that creates visual images from inside the body, but unlike other machines it shows them in horizontal slices.

5. Magnetic Resonance Imaging machine (also known as MRI): These are stronger machines that are used when medical professionals need to excite protons to record results with the clearest images of particular tissues as possible.

6. Radio-Isotope Scan or Nuclear Scintigraphy: These radioactive compounds enter into specific tissues to help produce scan results for diagnoses.

7. Interventional Radiology: When medical professionals need to perform minimally invasive surgeries like angioplasty under radiological imaging, they use this method.

8. Echocardiography Machine: This tool helps to perform heart sonography when medical professionals need to understand the function of the patient's heart.

9. Linear Accelerator: These are used for radiotherapy of cancer patients by oncologists.

10. Positron Emission Tomography machine (aka PET scan): This is used in nuclear medicine to produce three-dimensional color images of body functional processes.

11. Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging machine (aka FMRI): This machine is used for a specialized MRI.

12. Brachytherapy Apparatus: This apparatus dispenses medication from an implanted device, especially during cancer treatment.

13. SPECT Scan: Single photon emission computed tomography is an imaging technique that shows how blood flows to tissues and organs.

The tools and programs used by sonographers must be used properly to safely get the correct results - this is why such specialized training is required for this career.

Organic Vs Natural Foods

Taking a walk through the grocery store, you see so many different labels claiming this food product is better and healthier than the one next to it. Unfortunately, some marketing practices either lack integrity or lack knowledge - or perhaps a little of both. So is there a difference between Organic and Natural claims on a label? Most often, yes.

To be labeled Organic in the United States, the product must adhere to strict regulations imposed by the USDA's National Organic Program. Some of these regulations include: the ground must be chemical free for 36 months prior to selling crops as organic; limitations on vaccines and hormones given to animals, including poultry, beef cattle, and dairy cattle; and specific processing and labeling requirements.

Natural, on the other hand, has no regulations in the United States. Simply speaking, if something says it is "Natural," it is claiming that it is natural by the definition of the producer or manufacturer. Some believe using Round-Up and other such products is natural. Some believe there is nothing wrong with spraying weeds, giving animals growth hormones, or using fertilizers.

And there are some who take the definition of Natural to mean "the most natural way of life for plants and animals." These people don't use chemicals, but rather use alternative means to get rid of weed and pest problems through crop rotation, hand-picking, and other ways that are not detrimental to the plant. They allow nature to take its course with animals, giving the livestock access to pasture, space to move around, and accepting the natural growth instead of attempting to defy nature through growth hormones. Often times these products could qualify as being organic.

How can the average consumer know they are buying something that is actually natural and healthy? Check the label. It's usually a safe bet if a product has more then one or two impossible to pronounce, scientific sounding ingredients, it is no healthier then the box next to it that doesn't claim to be natural. Use local suppliers you know and trust. If you don't know local farmers personally, you may know someone who does, and who knows the farming practices used. Farmers generally don't, from what I've seen, hide the fact that they spray weeds, or what they use. So a simple solution, ask.

If you ever doubt the validity of a "natural" claim, and can't get an answer that satisfies your desire to have the healthiest, most natural food available, don't buy it. And if you ever doubt the validity of an "Organic" claim, USDA regulations require the certification agency be listed on the product. Call the agency and ask if the product is indeed certified organic. Organic certification agencies are here not only to give out certificates stating a product is organic. It is also their job to assure consumers that everything possible has been done to insure the integrity of the organic industry and the organic status of the products on the market.

CNA Examination

Proctored to trainees who are seeking certification as a nursing assistant, the CNA Skills exam and test are required parts of the process towards gaining vital knowledge and comprehension of the fundamentals in certified nursing assistant work. Separated into two halves, the CNA test is made up of a written test and a practical skills test. The skills aren't your normal multiple-choice-type exam (very unlike the SATs) while the written portion focuses on the overarching concepts and procedures that CNA hopefuls have been training on during their learning programs.

The best method to prepare for the CNA test is to sign up for a strong CNA training program such as the one offered by the Red Cross. If you receive superior test preparation, you should assumed superior results likewise when taking the exam. The training programs that Red Cross and other health care organizations provide will typically run for 3 to 4 months, with a focus on traditional classroom instruction as well as clinical experience and exposure for applying the skills learned in the classroom. In the hands-on experience portions of training the CNA trainees will be instructed by a registered nurse who has worked heavily in patient care and can impart strong advice to the trainees.

In taking the test, most former CNA trainees agree that the written portion is rather easy as long as proper study has been achieved, as the questions asked are only designed to probe understanding of the fundamental concepts of patient care. The CNA skills test is often where many CNA trainees have the largest challenges on their quest to gain certification. Some exam proctors will require trainees to bring with them a human visual aid to act as a model while the trainee demonstrates the skills they've learned throughout the CNA training program. Trainees will be expected to adequately prove a mastery of all the basic tenets of CNA job duties on their visual aid before getting certified.

Most exams will have trainees successfully complete between 3 to 6 specific CNA skills, such as measuring a patient's temperature, washing hands correctly, changing bed linen, transporting or correctly positioning a patient, and proper maintenance of a bedpan. Details are important when taking the test, as the proctor will be sure to mark off points for every mistake or blunder. If a trainee fails to knock on a patient's door before entering, or incorrectly washes hands, or failing to read a thermometer correctly will all count as points off the final exam score. For this reason, repeated practice before an exam, and staying calm generally helps to ensure the best possible score on exam day.

The written test and the skills assessment portions of the CNA certification exam will have a state examiner that observes your performance during the exam as well. These state examiners will present hypothetical scenarios for you to solve, to their satisfaction, and test your retention of vital CNA-related skills as learned throughout the training program. Be sure to study hard and there should be no problems with any of the aspects of the CNA exam.

LAN Design and the Hierarchical Network Model

CCNA focuses on networks for SMBs (small, medium businesses).
A hierarchical design model is recommended.
Easier to manage and expand.
Problems are solved more quickly.

Hierarchical design divides the network into 3 layers.
Core, (CL).
Distribrution, (DL).
Access, (AL).

Each layer provides specific functions.
This "modularity" facilitates scalability and performance.

Access Layer, (AL): lowest

Interfaces with the end device (user).
Includes routers, switches, bridges, hubs and wireless APs.
Provides a means of connecting devices to the network and controlling which one communicate on the network.

Distribution Layer, (DL):

Aggregates data received from the AL before transmitting to the CL for routing.
Controls traffic flow using policies and delineates broadcast domains with VLANs defined at the AL.
VLANs allow traffic segmentation (separate subnetworks).
DL switches are typically high-performance devices that have high availability and redundancy to ensure reliability.

Core Layer, (CL):

The high-speed backbone or the internetwork.
Critical for interconnectivity between distribution layer devices ? needs to be highly available and redundant.
Often connects to Internet resources.
Aggregates tfc fm all devices, so it must be capable of forwarding large amounts of data quickly.
Note: smaller networks often combine the distribution and core layers.

Three Logical Laye3rs are separated into a well-defined hierarchy.
It is much harder to see these layers physically.

Benefits of a Hierarchical Network:

Scalability:

Hierarchical networks scale very well.
The modularity allows you to replicate design elements.
Expansion is easy to plan and implement.

Redundancy:

As a network grows, availability becomes more important.
Availability increases dramatically with hierarchical networks.
E.G. AL switches connect to 2 DL switches. If one DL switch fails, the AL switch can switch to the other one.
Redundancy is limited is at the access layer. Typically, end devices do not connect to multiple switches.

Performance:

Properly designed networks can achieve near wire speed btwn all devices.

Security:

AL switches can be configured to provide control over which devices are allowed to connect to the network.
More advanced security policies available at the DL.
Some AL switches support L3 functionality, but it is usually the job of the DL switches, because they can process it much more efficiently.

Manageability:

Changes can be repeated across all devices in a layer because they presumably perform the same functions.
Deployment of new switches is simplified because configs can be copied with few modifications.
Consistency within each layer simplifies troubleshooting.

Maintainability:

Because of their modularity and scalability, hierarchical networks are easy to maintain.
This also means these networks are less expensive.
With other designs, manageability becomes increasingly complicated as the network grows.

Principles of Hierarchical Network Design:

Hierarchical design is no guarantee of good design.
Simple guidelines help differentiate btwn well-designed and poorly designed hierarchical networks.

Network Diameter:

Usually the first thing to consider.
The # of devices a packet crosses to reach its destination.
Small diameter ensures low and predictable latency.

Bandwidth Aggregation, (adding together):

Combines links btwn switches to achieve up throughput.
Cisco has a proprietary link aggregation technology called EtherChannel.
Aggregated links are indicated by multiple dotted lines with an oval or a single, dotted line with an oval.
Can be used at every layer (less common @ AL).

Redundancy:

Redundancy can be provided in a number of ways.
E.G. 2x connections btwn devices, or 2x devices.
Redundant links can be expensive.
Designing redundancy starts at the AL. You ensure that you accommodate all network devices ? 3 of AL switches.
This helps determine 3 of DL switches ? CL switches.

What is a Converged network?

SMBs are increasingly running voice, video and data.
Convergence is the process of combining these.
Until recently this was limited to large enterprises.
Legacy (older) equipment hinders convergence.
Because analog phones have not yet been replaced, you will also see legacy PBX telephone and IP-based systems.
Convergence is now easier and less expensive.
With a convergence there is just one network to manage.
This costs less to implement and manage.
IT cabling requirements are simplified.
Convergence also creates new opportunities.
You can tie voice and video directly into an employee's PC.
No need for an expensive phone or video equipment.
Softphones (Cisco IP |Communicator) offer a lot of flexibility.
With software businesses can quickly convert to converged networks with little capital expense.
With cheap webcams videoconferencing can be added.

Separate Voice, Video and Data Networks:

Voice networks contain isolated phone lines running to a PBX (Private BDXT Exchange) switch located in a Telco wiring closet PSTN (Public Switch Telephone Network).
Telco closet often separate fm the data and video closets.
New phone ? a new line to the PBX.
Using a properly designed hierarchical network voice lines can be added with little or no impact.
Now that networks can accommodate the BW it makes sense to converge.

Considerations for Hierarchical Network Switches:

Tfc Flow Analysis:
The process of measuring BW usage and analyzing it for performance tuning, planning, and HW improvement.
To select the appropriate gear in a hierarchical network, you need to spec out tfc flows, users and servers.
Networks must be designed with an eye on growth.
Done using tfc flow analysis software.
Should consider port densities and forwarding rates to ensure adequate growth capability.

Analysis Tools:

Many tfc flow analysis tools are available.
E.G. Solarwinds Orion 8.1 NetFlow Analysis.

User Communities Analysis:

Identifies user grpings and their impact on net performance.
Affects port density and tfc flow, which influences the selection of network switches.
Typically users are grped according to job function.
E.G. HR one floor and Finance on another.
Each dept. has different users and needs, and requires access to different resources through the network.
Choose switches that have enough ports to meet the dept needs and pwrful enough to accommodate tfc.
Good network design also factors in the growth.
Investigate the tfc generated by end-user applications.
Some user communities generate a lot, some do not.
The location of the user communities influences where data stores and server farms are located.
By locating users close to their servers, you can reduce network diameter, reducing the impact on other users.
However, usage is not always bound by department or physical location.

Data Stores and Data Servers Analysis:

Data stores can be servers, SANs, NAS, tape bu units, or any other storage device or component.
Considers both client-server and server-server tfc.
Client-server tfc typically traverses multiple switches.
BW aggregation and switch forwarding rates can help eliminate bottlenecks for this type of tfc.
Some server apps generate high volumes btwn servers.
These server shouls be located close to each other (i.e. secured data centers).
Tfc across data center switches is typically very high.
Requires higher performing switches.

Topology Diagrams:

A graphical representation of a network infrastructure.
Shows how all switches are interconnected, including which ports interconnect devices.
It shows where and how many switches are in use.
Can also contain info on device densities and user grps.
Helps visually identify potential bottlenecks.
Very difficult to create after the fact.

Switch Features:

Switch Form Factors:

Fixed or modular config, and stackable or non-stackable.
Thickness is expressed in rack units. (i.e. 1U, 3U).
Fixed Config Switches - Cannot add hardware.
Modular Switches - chassis allows for multiple line cards which contain the ports.
The larger the chassis, the more modules it can support.

Stackable Switches:

Can be interconnected using a special backplane cable that provides high-bandwidth throughput btwn the switches.
Cisco's StackWise technology allows you to interconnect up to nine switches using fully redundant backplane connections.
Stacked switches effectively operate as a single larger switch.
Desirable where fault tolerance and BW availability are critical and a modular switch is too costly.

Performance:

Port Density:

Port density is the 3 of ports available per switch.
Fixed sitches typically 1,000 ports!

Large enterprise networks require high density, modular switches to make the best use of space and pwr.
Also prevent uplink bottlenecks.
A series of fixed swtches consume many additional ports for BW aggregation btwn switches.
Whith a modular switch, aggregation is less of an issue because the chassis backplane provides the BW.

Forwarding Rates:

The processing capabilities of a switch in bps.
Switch product lines are classified by forwarding rates.
If this rate is too low, it cannot accommodate wire-speed across all ports.
Wire speed = rate that each port is capable of (10Mbps etc).
E.G. 48-port GbE switch at wire speed = 48Gbps of tfc.
If the switch only supports 32 Gbps (internally), it cannot run at full wire speed across all posrts simultaneously.
Access switches typically do not need full wire speed because they are physically limited by their uplinks to the DL.

Link Aggregation:

Determine if there are enough ports to aggregate to support the required BW.
E.G. GbE 24-port switch could generate up to 24 Gbps.
If it is connected to the network by a single cable, it can only forward 1 Gbps to the rest of the network.
That results in 1/24th wire speed for each of the 24 devices.
Link aggregation helps to reduce these bottlenecks by allowing up to 8 ports to be grped, providing up to 8 Gbps.
With multiple 10GbE uplinks very high throughput rates can be achieved.
Cisco uses the term EtherChannel = aggregated ports.

Power over Ethernet (PoE):

PoE allows a switch to deliver power over existing Ethernet.
Can be used by IP phones and some wireless APs.
Allows more flexibility for equipment installations.
Adds considerable cost to the switch.
PoE switch marked with a `V`for volts.

Layer 3 Functions:

Typically, switches operate at L2 and deal primarily with MAC addresses.
L3 switches offer advanced functionality.
L3 switches = multilayer switches.

Switch features in a Hierarchical Network:

Access Layer switch Features:

Port security - first line of defense for a network.
How many or what devices are allowed to connect.
All Cisco switches support port layer security.
VLANs - component of converged networks.
Voice tfc is typically given a separate VLAN.
Port speed:
Fast Ethernet is adequate for VoIP and most data tfc.
PoE - much more expensive, so use only when required.
Link Aggregation - supported at all 3 lvls.
QoS - needed for VoIP.

Distribution Layer Switch features:

Collect all AL switch data and forward it to the CL switches.
Provides the inter-VLAN routing functions.
DL switches have higher processing capabilities than AL.
Need L3 to support inter-VLAN routing.

Security Policies:

Need L3 so advanced security policies can be applied.
ACLs control tfc flows through a network.
ACLs allow switches to filter tfc.
ACLs are CPU-intensive because they need to inspect every packet and match ACL rules.
Placing ACLs at the DL also reduces the 3 of switches that require the extra mgmt configuration.
Policy-based connectivity and departmentaléworkgroup access to the core layer.

Quality of Service:

DL switches need to maintain the priorities of tfc coming fm the AL switches that have implemented QoS.
If not all the devices support QoS, the benefits will be reduced -. poor performance and quality.
DL switches are under high demand.
They need redundancy for adequate availability.
DL switches are typically implemented in pairs.
Recommended that they support multiple, hot swappable pwr supplies.
Finally, they need to support link aggregation and high-bandwidth aggregated links back to the core.

Core Layer Switch Features:

The CL is the high-speed backbone.
The forwarding rate is dependent on the number of devices participating in the network.
If you choose an inadequate switch at the core, you face potential bottleneck issues slowing down all tfc.
CL switches should support aggregated 10GbE.
L3 redundancy has faster convergence than L2, so, ensure CL switches support L3 functions.
CL switches should support FULL redundancy features.
QoS is important at the core since high-speed WAN access is often prohibitivel expensive.

Switches for SMBs:

Identify the Cisco switches used in SMB applications.

The features of Cisco Catalyst Switches:

You cannot simply select a switch by the size of a business.
Businesses are often cross integrated with other entities.
A 6500 makes sense as an AL switch where there are hundreds of users in an area, such as a stock exchange.
Cat Express 500 - forwarding rates = 8.8 - 24 Gbps.
Cat 2960 - L3, QoS, no PoE, 16 - 32 Gbps.
Cat 3560 - enterprise-class PoE, QoS, 32 - 128 Gbps.
Cat 3750 - stackable high performance.
Cat 4500 - DL midrange modular - up to 136 Gbps.
Cat 4900 - data center.
Cat 6500 - DL and CL - up to 720 Gbps.

Miscellaneous:

MDF - Main Distribution Facility.
Gi 0é1 - abbreviation for Gigabit Ethernet ports.
Spanning Tree - protocols allows redundant paths, but shuts down some links to avoid switching loops.

Questions to Ask Siamese Cat Breeders

Siamese cats are a wonderful breed to have in your home: They're great with children, don't typically scratch people or furniture, aren't known for chewing electrical cords or other household items and are a beautiful animal to showcase to your friends and guests. When making the decision to purchase one, you need to ask different Siamese cat breeders a few questions, to make sure you're making a good investments, rather than buying problems for yourself.

1. Ask for references. Most people don't buy an exotic breed of animal, without research and your best research hear will be to ask Siamese cat breeders for references from past and current customers. If the breeder seems put off by your request, or needs time to get them together -- be wary. Most breeders will be ready for the request and will have a list readily available for you, and other potential customers.

2. Ask to see the cat's certification and/or the parent's certification. Most health problems are hereditary and if Siamese cat breeders don't have the paperwork to prove the cat's family history: You may be looking at expensive health complications in the future.

3. Ask about guarantees. A quality breeder, who cares about their reputation will offer you a guarantee that the cat will be free of hereditary illnesses. Considering that you're paying well for a special breed of feline, rather than picking one up at the animal shelter -- a guarantee should be a must unless you're receiving a considerable discount.

4. Ask about what treatments that the cat has had. All kittens need to be de-wormed and receive their scheduled vaccinations. Any good Siamese cat breeders will already be ahead of the required vaccination schedules.

5. Ask about recommendations for taking care of your new cat. A knowledgeable breeder will be able to quickly educate you on how to care for your cat and will offer themselves as a resource for information throughout the course of your cat's life.

How to Become a Special Education Teacher

Get Started

  1. Become qualified. You need two things: A State Teaching certification and (since NCLB was enacted) status as a Highly Qualified teacher in the subjects you plan to teach. Every state has its own guidelines for teaching certification and HQ. Check with your state's Department of Education (or equivalent department) for specific guidelines.
    • Although it varies, the following will be needed for certification: A four year degree in special education, OR a four year degree in another subject area, with a master's degree in special education. (If you have a four year degree in a subject other than education, many states will allow you an emergency or temporary certificate so that you may teach while earning your certification in Special Education.)

  2. Find a suitable university or college with a program in Special Education. Public universities often do just as well as private colleges, if not better in some circumstances, at preparing you for working in a public school.

  3. Take as many elective courses as possible in reading and math. Special education students are nearly always integrated in the english and math regular classrooms. This will give you a better idea of their needs. Reading instruction is also critical in elementary grades.

  4. Look around for alternative options. If your degree does not also make you Highly Qualified, check your options. Each state usually has two or three means of becoming HQ. The most direct option tends to be a Praxis II exam if your state considers it acceptable.

Tips

  • Further your education whenever possible. The willingness to continually improve your understanding of the subjects you teach and of instruction methodology is what will make you an excellent teacher.

  • While taking courses, take care to learn as much as possible about reading, writing, math, special education curriculum, learning styles and teaching styles.

  • Self-confidence is important; you should at all times emit an aura of having everything under control, even when you just want to run away and cry.

  • Respect is earned. While you will be able to have some leverage in your position, good teaching will not take place until your students respect you.

  • In challenging situations (and there will be many), keep your cool; respect is easily lost.

  • The kids can and will try anything to throw you off balance, so have a plan to handle it before it happens.

  • Choose your battles; some conflicts are just not worth engaging in. It will only distract you and your students and derail the class.

  • You will have some fantastic moments that will make you wonder how you could ever have considered anything but teaching.

  • Always over-prepare your lessons. Bored kids are noisy kids.

  • Always be prepared for the unexpected. You might have the best lesson in the world planned, but sometimes half the class is clueless to the concept and you have to adjust everything.

  • Be sure you know to spell and use correct grammar. Nothing looks worse than a teacher who can't spell or punctuate properly, even the students don't know the difference.

  • Greet your students each morning to read their moods even before the school day begins. If appropriate, hug each of them. At least give each of them each a high five and tell them you are glad that they are there. That may be the only positive contact they have all day.

Warnings

  • The Special Education field is not for everyone; it takes a lot of patience and you'll have to be prepared for anything.

  • You are not the kids' friend. Relationships can become misunderstood. Be friendly with your students, but keep a distance.

Chronic Stuffy Nose? Fungus May Be the Culprit

If your nose is stuffy during the pollen seasons in the spring and fall, check with an allergist. Allergy injections can help control your symptoms. If your stuffy nose started after puberty, you don't have allergies and your nose is stuffy 12 months a year, allergy injections usually are ineffective. Antihistamines and decongestant pills help to control your symptoms a little. Cortisone-type pills are highly effective but have side effects, such as obesity and osteoporosis. Cortisone-type nasal sprays are safer than the pills. So doctors are continuously searching for better ways to treat people with chronically stuffy and running noses.

Researchers at the Mayo Clinic found fungi in 96 percent of people with chronic sinusitis. The most common fungi are alternaria, penicillium, cladosporium, aspergillus, candida and fusarium. A sinus cat scan will tell whether a person has a sinus infection. If the cat scan shows fluid levels indicating a sinus infection, the doctor should order a fungus culture of the nose. If the culture is positive for fungi, the doctor should consider treatment with antifungal medication, even though there are no good studies to show the fungal medicines cure sinusitis, because the present treatment of cortisones works only in the short run, and shortens life by causing osteoporosis, high blood pressure and obesity. If the fungus infection is positive, the person should be treated with the appropriate anti-fungal medication such as Sporanox, Lamisil or Diflucan.

Your nose is supposed to clean, heat and moisturize the air that you breathe. The inside of your nose is covered with a sticky mucous that traps dirt, pollen, mold and other pollutants and prevents them from reaching your lungs. Inside of each nostril are large ridges called turbinates that have large blood vessels in them. When the inner lining of one side of your nose fills up with pollutants, the blood vessels inside the turbinates enlarge and swell the turbinates so they stop air from entering that side of your nose and force you to breathe through the other side of your nose. Then small hairs called cilia in the lining of your nose sweep the mucous and filth toward your mouth where you swallow them and they pass from your body.

All day and night, it is normal for you to breathe through one side of your nose and then the other. It is abnormal for the turbinates on both sides to swell at the same time and cause a stuffy nose. If your nose is stuffy in the spring and fall, you probably have an allergy and need allergy tests. If you have thick yellow or green mucous, you probably have an infection and need a culture and antibiotics. If you are exposed to irritants such as hair spray or smoke, that is probably the cause, and if your stuffiness is worse in the winter, the cause is probably breathing dry, cold air. If no cause is found, your doctor usually diagnoses vasomotor rhinitis which means that he doesn't have the foggiest idea what's causing your stuffiness and the only relatively safe and effective treatment offered today is daily use of a cortisone nasal spray such as Vancenase, Beconase or Rhinocort.

Mexico City - General Information

Mexico City is the capital and most populous city in Mexico. It is the most populated city in America. It is located in the center of the country, in the Valley of Mexico, a plateau at an altitude of 2250 meters. It is surrounded by peaks that extend more than 5000 meters above sea level.

It is often referred to as official Distrito Federal (DF, Federal District) to avoid confusion with the country or the State of Mexico. Founded in 1325 by Mexicas (Aztecs), the city of Tenochtitlan Precolumbian was completely destroyed by Spanish conquerors in the early sixteenth century. Today Mexico City has become one of the most densely populated cities in the world with an estimated population of around 20 million people. This places Mexico City third in the world behind Tokyo and New York. It is also the second most populated urban area in the world after Tokyo. Political, economic and cultural development of Mexico, has made it into one of the most dynamic cities in Latin America. Mexico City still faces the problems of many other megacities such as population explosion, saturation channels of communication, crime and corruption.

Air pollution is one of the many problems that the authorities of the Mexican capital face. This pollution is the result of intense traffic - there are 4 million cars, 27,000 microbuses, 92,000 taxis which consumes about 14 million gallons of gasoline every day. Urban sprawl and the construction of new highways over the past thirty years have helped the increase use of cars in Mexico. The rapid growth of manufacturing plants and industries from abroad who have plants in Mexico for cheap labor have also added to the local pollution problem.

Naturopathy Degrees

If you've ever pondered the thought of attaining one of several Naturopathy Degrees offered by naturopathic colleges and other healing arts schools, you'd be surprised to know how expansive the curriculum can be. Naturopathy Degrees can only be earned once students have completed an extensive four-year course in a broad assortment of studies. Coursework may include in-depth lessons in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, pathology, health and wellness, geriatric health care, pharmacology and pathology, nutrition, herbology, naturopathy, homeopathy, and principle business ethics and practices.

Students wishing to earn their Naturopathy Degrees should be aware that in order to earn Naturopathy Degrees, applicants may need to meet certain prerequisites (as set by individual schools), such as a Bachelor's degree or medically-related course.

Naturopathy Degrees may be gained by entrants who are willing to put a great deal of dedication into their health studies and clinical participation. Students who diligently work toward Naturopathy Degrees can expect to graduate successfully from one of several naturopathic schools and earn the title of Doctor of Naturopathy. However, it is important to review state requirements, as many Naturopathy Degrees must be accompanied by state licensure to become a practicing naturopathic doctor.

While some naturopathic colleges offer certification and diploma programs for students seeking brief overviews of herbology and mind-body-spirit medicine, many emphasize programs offering Naturopathy Degrees as the final outcome of pupil studies. Once Naturopathy Degrees have been awarded to winning candidates, graduates can apply for certification through the American Naturopathic Certification Board (ANCB). In this instance, necessary credentials for taking the ANCB examination include successful completion of a master's degree in nutritional wellness, or (preferably) traditional Naturopathy Degrees. Remember, too, that certification does not take the place of professional licensure.

In addition, once students have earned their Naturopathy Degrees and have met all qualifications to become a practicing ND, it is crucial to maintain their knowledge and skills in the areas of health and wellness. Aside from Naturopathy Degrees, other coursework may be offered in the form of continuing education, online learning and distance learning.

Traditional practitioners, too, may wish to seek Naturopathy Degrees to expand patient services and to include natural and noninvasive treatments and therapies. With the rate of acceptance growing for natural and alternative medicines in the world community today, attainment of Naturopathy Degrees can undoubtedly add to personal and professional livelihood.

Accredited College Degrees Hold More Value

Accredited college degrees can help to advance your career and are in general worth more than non-accredited degrees. The education community set up certain standards that must be followed in order for a university or college to be considered a reputable learning institution. As a result, many jobs will not accept a degree from applicants that are not accredited college degrees. A degree that doesn't have this accreditation is often not taken into consideration for showing qualification and certification for certain job positions. In fact, many people feel that anything but accredited college degrees is a waste of money and that the degree is not worth the paper that it is printed on.

With the advancement of technology and software development, virtually anyone with some computer skills can purchase a domain and then set up a virtual university. These virtual universities have the software to create virtual classrooms, online exams for students, message boards, forums and even virtual offices for the staff that will lead the virtual university. However, the standards that are required for accredited colleges are not met and the degree that you will receive will not have the accreditation to stand behind it.

Does this mean that you should avoid obtaining your higher education online? The answer is absolutely not. There are numerous accredited college degrees that you can earn through Internet Universities. The importance is to realize that you should only consider enrolling in the schools that have an accreditation to back their learning institution. This means that they followed the criteria that are necessary for the accreditation. The essential value of the degree will be as worthwhile from these universities as it is from traditional universities.

Many companies in the United States will pay for college related expenses and even tuition for college degrees. The companies feel that employees will benefit and as a result the company will benefit. Since they are paying for the higher education, companies need confirmation that the material that will be taught and the information that their employees will learn is valuable and accurate. As a result, they will only pay for accredited college degrees instead of degrees from just anywhere. This is true for both online and offline universities that students can obtain a college degree. Find out more at http://www.highereducationandyoungpeople.com

Accredited schools are listed on the Internet. You can find out if a school is accredited, whether online or offline, from the various college rankings list. You can take courses that are not from an accredited learning institution and obtain certificates of completion if you want to learn specific tasks, subjects and so forth. However, you will not be receiving a college degree. Some companies will accept certificates of completion for various subjects as part of your resume for certifications and qualifications for the openings that they have. Applicants that have the same certification from an accredited learning institution will more than likely have the advantage though because companies and human resource departments value the certifications from these learning institutions more than the other ones.

CNA Certification Test - Steps to Pass a Difficult CNA Certification Test

When it comes to test and exams the one thing you can be certain of is jitters, nerves and the feeling of butterflies in your stomach. Well, if you're studying to become a certified nurse assistant, then you better be prepared to face your text to gain your certificate. Read on for a few tips to pass a difficult CNA certification test.

First, make sure you are prepared. So get to know when your exam is way before hand and come up with a study plan. You don't only need your textbook but make sure you've got all your necessary materials such as the internet for additional information, revision books, complete set of stationary and a place to study that is distraction free.

Next, get organized. To make sure you make the most out of your days and study as much as you can, draw out a timetable as to how you would spend your days. When allocating study time, don't be overachieving and go overboard but instead, be realistic and only put it as many hours as you think you can do. Don't forget to include enough time for rest and leisure too. Also, keep your study desk neat and clean and have your notes organized so that it would be easy to go through and find what you want when you want it.

Besides that, to make sure that you pass your text, you must know all that there is to know. So don't study hard but study smart. If you're one who is prone to memorizing everything blindly from the textbook then it's about time to stop doing that and start understanding everything and only then would you be able to memorize what you need effectively.

All in all, you don't have to be a born genius to ace this test, so long as you want to do it, you can. Just put on your thinking cap, discipline yourself and you would be all set to walk into that exam room feeling confident and good.

EMT Vs Paramedic

People are often confused about the job specifications when it comes to EMT vs paramedic, and sometimes the two jobs are even believed to be interchangeable. A basic EMT, or emergency medical technician, is different from a paramedic, although paramedics are also technically EMTs with slightly higher skill levels and training. EMT paramedic jobs are typically referred to as paramedic jobs, while basic emergency technician jobs are referred to as EMT jobs, though they are sometimes referred to as all in one: EMT paramedic

EMT paramedic careers start out the same as basic EMT careers. EMT-Paramedic certification is more complex than EMT-Basic certification, though. The biggest difference is in the number of training hours involved and the on-the-job skills that the individuals are allowed to perform. Basic EMTs undergo 120 to 150 hours of training, while EMT Paramedic certification requires anywhere from 1,200 hours to 1,800 hours of training. Many EMT paramedic jobs require a two-year degree program, but some programs can be completed more quickly, allowing graduates to get a job in the field as fast as possible.

EMT and paramedic careers have a much broader scope of job duties compared to EMT basic careers. Paramedics are allowed to break skin, while basic EMTs are not. Paramedics can give shots and use more advanced airway management devices to help support the patient's breathing, and in many states they are trained to use as many as 40 medications. Basic EMTs, on the other hand, can only use asthma inhalers, epinephrine auto-injectors, glucose and oxygen.

For those considering EMT vs paramedic careers, you may want to start out with your EMT-Basic certification and see if the career is right for you, then continue on to the next level of certification. There is also an intermediate level between basic and paramedic EMTs in some states. This is a challenging job without a lot of prestige, but the rewards of knowing you're saving lives can make it more than worthwhile. A local school or technical institute can provide more information. Institutions offering quality EMT and Paramedic Programs include National College, Medix College, Keiser Career College and Sanford-Brown College.

Find top allied health schools which offer EMT Paramedic courses in USA or Canada at HealthDegreesU.com. Choose the perfect allied health school and EMT Paramedic program for you and start your path to a rewarding career.

How to Solve Litterbox Problems in Multi-cat Homes

When we have only one cat and she misses the litterbox, it can be hard to fix. When we have more than one cat in the house, it can be even harder. Here's a step-by-step guide to help stop litterbox problems in a multi-cat home. first of all, act fast. A litterbox problem that continues for a long time can become harder and harder to solve. Litterbox mistakes can lead to territorial responses, and disturb the routines and hierarchies of your entire household. Will Muffin still want to take her daily afternoon snooze on the couch if Tiger urinated there? She may find some other area, displacing more and more of your cats, and creating fighting and other dominance displays. If you put off solving the problem, hoping it will go away on its own, you may find it multiplying in your home.

Find the culprit. Before you even try to determine the "why," figure out the "who." If you catch it early enough, you can hopefully nail it down to one cat. Many people like to isolate each cat to determine which cat is causing the problem, but displacing one cat, even overnight, can sometimes lead to dominance displays in the others, as they claim undefended territory. If you have new cats, or kittens reaching adulthood, you may want to visit the vet for help. Your veterinarian can prescribe fluorescein for your cats, helping you to determine which urine stain(s) glow under an ultraviolet light.

Rule out a Veterinary Problem. Veterinary causes underlie many litterbox problems, particularly in household with older cats or those with access to the outdoors. Urinary tract infections are one of many common causes, where the cat develops an aversion to the box as a painful place to be. Other health problems can also cause litterbox mistakes. Worse, without visiting the veterinarian, your other cats may be at risk, which could cause the problem to multiply. No behavior techniques in the world will help a cat with a veterinary problem, so don't skip the trip to the vet.

Observe the Behavior. If the vet rules out a health problem, I next recommend a brief observation period. It's always very frustrating to the owner to let the cat continue his litterbox mistakes, but it gives you the knowledge to attack the specific problem. During the observation period, try to concentrate on the things in the environment that may be important to your cat, like litterboxes, food bowls, favorite places, the routines of the other cats and people in the home, etc. Start a journal where you record as much information as you can about every litterbox mistake, then look for links. Does the cat always use the same room? Is it always on carpeting? Does it happen after meals, or at some other time of day? Are the other cats nearby? Did you have guests over? When you isolate the specific stimuli involved, it allows you greater control without making major changes in the environment that may upset the rest of the cats.

Break the Habit. Elimination sites are matters of preference, and when the cat gets into the routine of going to a certain location, you'll need to prevent the behavior from recurring. Since the smell of declining urine is a signal for the cat to "reapply," clean the accident site with a pet odor remover - perhaps multiple times to get past the cat's sensitive nose. Block off the area while the product does its work. Remote deterrents, that work whether you are around or not, will keep the cat from returning to the area whenever you aren't standing guard. Double-sided tape or an upside-down plastic carpet runner, pointy feet up, can keep your cat from standing in the same area. Cats also hate to be startled, so anything that can safely surprise the cat when he visits that area can help make the area less "cat-friendly."

Make the current litterbox more appealing. While you are preventing bad habits, make good habits more appealing. The litterbox should be clean, have privacy, and in multi-cat homes, escapability is also important. This simply means that the cat can see off a distance, so he won't be ambushed in the box, or on his way there. Most cats prefer clumping, non-perfumed litter, but work with your individual cat to determine whether a box of a different size, shape, or litter would help.

Retrain the cats. If it doesn't seem to help to address the individual factors in your journal, or your cat has never regularly used the litterbox, you may want to retrain the cat by himself. Use this as a last resort, since removing the cat from the hierarchy may upset the routines of all the cats in the home. Keep the cat in a small, uncarpeted room, with a clean litterbox, food bowl, and toys in opposite corners. Pick up all rugs from the floor, so the only soft place to choose to eliminate will be the litterbox. Visit the cat often, and clean the box regularly. I also recommend recording the times that the cat uses the box. Many cats stick to a regular routine, so once you've determined when the cat is likely to use the box, you can let the cat out during low-risk times to maintain the hierarchy, and put him back in the room with the litterbox during high risk periods. Repetition of successful use will increase the cat's preference to the box.

General stress reduction. In some situations, it's difficult to determine specific environmental triggers for a problem behavior. However, sometimes general stress reduction techniques will prove helpful, particularly in multi-cat homes. For litterbox problems that have arisen from territorial disputes, additional resources may reduce competition for resources. Extra litterboxes and food bowls are always helpful, but remember that YOU are also an important resource, so give each cat as much attention as they could possibly want. Exercise can also help redirect cats energies. It can also help desensitize cats to each other, while they are praised for attacking a toy while the other cat watches. Routines are also very important in multi-cat homes, particularly when older cats are involved. Scheduled feeding, petting and exercise periods at the same time and location every day can further reduce stress that may be contributing to the litterbox problem.

Litterbox problems in multi-cat homes can be difficult. However, caring responsible owners can have an advantage solving the problem with they use quick, decisive actions and apply solid behavioral techniques.

Art Schools Aren't Just for Art

Years ago, art schools typically were limited to those who had artistic ability and were interested in drawing, painting, and more traditional artistic careers. Now art schools offer a wide range of programs, certifications, and degrees that will satisfy any creative talent by offering many career opportunities and options.

Art schools now offer programs ranging from Advertising, Dancing and Choreography, Art, Music, Game Art and Design, Graphic Design, Web Design, to Interior Design and Culinary Management. If you are interested in fashion, some schools also offer Fashion and Retail Management, as well as Media Arts and Animation. Interested in acting? Art schools offer training in that area, as well as film and video editing, audio and video equipment technicians, camera and motion pictures. These are just a few examples of programs offered. The possibilities are endless, and vary by school.

Art schools offer students the ability to refine their artistic skills at a college level, gain valuable business and marketing skills, develop interpersonal skills, and obtain advanced training while obtaining a degree or certification. It provides a great opportunity to mingle with like minded people, and learn new skills and techniques.

Depending on the program, and level of training desired, most art schools offer 1 month to 2 year certification programs that train in fundamental art/program skills, 2 year associate degrees, or 4 year bachelor's degrees as a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in liberal arts, or a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in professional programs. Post graduate degrees, or master's degrees, are also available at select art schools.

If you are interested in a specific area of study or a certain program, it makes sense to look at art several schools to find the one that best fits your needs. Understand what your career objectives are, and how much time and money you can invest on your education. Based on that, determine what certification or degree level you want to obtain, and what art schools offer that particular field of study. Research the reputation of the school and placement of graduates. Visit the school and observe the facility, classes, students, and faculty.

Many art schools also offer online certification and degrees, which may make sense for you if you want to stay at home and earn your degree, or are working and want to attend school on a part time basis.

Make sure any art schools that you look at are accredited by a National Association in your program area (i.e. National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD), National Association of Schools of Music (NASM), Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT), etc.). Accreditation ensures that the school meets quality standards set forth by the National Commission, and allows students to participate in federal and state financial aid programs.

Art schools expand the career options you have after high school, or can offer additional training and experience to those who might be interested in pursuing something a little different than what they are doing now. With such a wide variety of programs, it makes sense to check them out, and see what might be in store for your creative side.

Holistic Nursing School Offers Alternative Nursing Education

A holistic nursing school focuses in teaching a unique approach to healthcare called holism, which concerns improving the overall health of the patient in addition to treatment of the diagnosed illness or disease. The holistic approach addresses a patient's well being as a whole - his physical, mental and emotional health.

In a holistic nursing school, traditional nursing theories and practice combine with alternative healthcare methods and natural healing to enhance a person's overall well being. These students promote self-awareness and self-care, believing that each one of us should be responsible for our health.

These schools train students to connect with their patients emotionally and mentally as they administer care and treatment. There is great emphasis in compassion and giving patients personal attention. These schools also cultivate spirituality in students through reflection and meditation that leads not only to individual awareness but also to awareness to other people, which is essential in the practice of holistic nursing.

This type of nursing school teaches the theories of holistic nursing and gives students diverse training in alternative medicine, which includes massage, touch therapy, music therapies, aromatherapy, stress management, herbology, nutrition, hypnosis, homeopathy, acupuncture and other ancient healing techniques.

Education and training opens many opportunities in your nursing practice. Students that complete training from a holistic nursing school may become holistic nurses, holistic practitioners and counselors and may work in healthcare clinics and facilities, treatment centers, spas, health clubs, wellness centers or have their own private practice of holistic healthcare.

It used to be that holism is viewed by much skepticism but society has started to embrace holistic medicine and its benefits as more and more patients seek natural and non-invasive ways to prevent and treat disease. Many traditional doctors and nurses have attended holistic schools in order to deliver alternative approaches in caring and treating patients.

Many nursing schools offer certification programs in holistic nursing to practicing nurses or to nursing students. Some offer online programs and self-paced home study programs. You can also check the Internet if there is any school in your state that operates separate from traditional nursing schools in universities or colleges.

The American Holistic Nurses' Certification Corp. or AHNCC gives Holistic Nursing Certification, which requires a Baccalaureate Degree, one year of practice and forty-eight hours of continuing education in the past two years. If you are ready to take the certification exam, contact AHNCC for the exam schedule and locations.

How to Prepare for MBA Entrance Exams

Vince Lombardi once said "Dictionary is the only place that success comes before work. Hard work is the price we must pay for success. I think you can accomplish anything if you're willing to pay the price."
Success in MBA Entrance Exam in India is also no cake walk. You need in-depth knowledge, analytical mind, sharp memory and above all, systematic planning and preparation. Needless to say that the candidates cannot and should not attempt preparation for his MBA Entrance Test overnight. Since the competition is amongst the best available talent from all disciplines, meticulous and long term preparation are required to get admitted to the MBA program. Although the syllabi in the admission/entrance test differ from university to university, there are certain common aspects that appear in most of the entrance test, CAT, XAT, MAT, XLRI, SNAP and MBA Entrance Exams conducted by State Universities in one form or the other. These aspects include tests on quantitative aptitude, reasoning, intelligence, comprehension, case analysis, relationships, word power, synonyms, antonyms, general knowledge/awareness, etc. It is therefore, essential that the candidates start preparing well in advance on all the above aspects. If one can get hold of previous year's papers or at least the pattern, this would go a long way in guiding the candidates to prepare properly for the test.

Here are some tips to prepare on important aspects which are common to most of the MBA entrance examinations in India:

(1) Quantitative Aptitude: A candidate seeking admission to MBA programme is expected to have aptitude for basic and elementary accounting as well as the knack of solving the simple arithmetic problems. This is one of the areas in the admission test which, if properly prepared and practiced, is likely to put the candidate ahead of others, as one can hope to score even 100% marks in this part. There may be several types of questions that may form part of quantitative aptitude test. The first category could be simple arithmetic problems including profit and loss, percentages, ratio, averages, partnership, etc. Such problems involve simple calculations and with a little practice and basic aptitude, can be solved correctly. The second category of questions could involve multiplication or divisions in 5 to 6 figures or decimals. It may be quite time-consuming if the candidates start actually attempting the entire calculations. Since the candidates are required to work against time it is not advisable to waste time on such calculations. With a little practice, the candidates can easily eliminate most of the choices straightaway to arrive at the correct answer even without any calculations. This can be achieved if the candidates look at all the choices carefully before actually attempting the calculations. Another category of questions may be directed at testing only the intelligence of the candidate and not his/her ability to calculate. There may be some other questions aimed at testing the common sense of the candidates. The entire area of quantitative aptitude, therefore, needs constant practice to calculate quickly with accuracy. More practice is also essential for the candidates to gain confidence in this part of the test. Even if a candidate does not have the basic aptitude for figure-work, he/she can make up for this deficiency by regular practice and a lot of hard work. It is strongly recommended that the candidates practice and attempt all the questions on quantitative.

(b) Logical Reasoning: Questions on logical reasoning may be of several types and in several forms. These could include a statement on which the candidates are asked to draw correct interference out of the given choices. There could be questions on series of words and figures, arrangement of alphabets, brain teasers or even such questions as only call for drawing logical inferences. Just like quantitative aptitude test, this portion of admission test also needs special and detailed preparations and practice. Most of the questions under this category infact test the common sense and sense of proportion and reasoning among the candidates and therefore, must be attempted with a cool head. In case of statements, the given statement as well as choices given must be read at least twice before choosing the right answer. In case there are more than three questions on arrangements of alphabets, it is advisable to write down all the alphabets on the rough work sheet. This will facilitate easy and quick attempt of questions on alphabets. Similarly, there could be certain questions on distances traveled in different directions. In such questions it is proper to draw a rough diagram giving distances traveled in various directions to get the correct answer. Constant practice in the questions on reasoning would make the candidates confident to tackle this particular aspect of the test. To do well in this part of the test, the candidates must therefore, practice hard.

(c) Comprehension Test: Comprehension test is aimed at gauging the understanding of English language by the candidates. Usually, a paragraph is given which the candidates are required to go through carefully and then answer the question by choosing the correct answer. To attempt this part speedily and correctly, the candidates must practice reading with a quick speed and understanding the entire passage. Answer to most of the questions are easily located within the passage itself. But there are certain questions, answers to which are not directly available in the given passage. Such questions can only be answered by those candidates who can understand the passage fully. Regular practice would help the candidates to attempt the comprehension test in more effective and appropriate manner. Tests of English language given in every issue of this magazine invariably contain small comprehension passages. Practice of such passages may be of great help to the candidates for preparing this test.

(d) General Awareness: As the name suggests, the test of general awareness aims to judge the general knowledge of the candidates. Basic facts about all aspects of general knowledge like Science, Geography, History, Economics, Polity, etc are essentially required to be known. A good knowledge of all branches of general knowledge is essential which can only be achieved by reading good books. Radiologic Technology Online

Online Radiologic Technology Schools offer affordable, flexible, and convenient degree programs to busy, working adults. Online colleges and universities allow the option of learning at home at your own convenience. Distance learning is a convenient way to study anywhere via the Internet through online schools, colleges, and universities.

Radiologic Technology is a medical specialty that incorporates imaging to diagnose and treat diseases. Associate degrees and certificates in Radiologic Technology include x-ray and radiation, while advanced degrees in Radiologic Technology from four-year institutions are possible in ultrasound, fluoroscopy, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and in nuclear medicine.

Training programs in Online Radiographic Technology schools, colleges, and universities range in length from one year for a certificate to about two years for an associate degree. Two-year associate degrees are most common. Bachelor and degrees in Radiologic Technology take longer.

Programs of study may include office skills and office management, as technicians of Radiologic Technology may be responsible for maintaining records and equipment, managing a radiology department, or preparing work schedules.

Most positions in Radiologic Technology are found in hospitals, but many positions are in physicians' offices, medical and diagnostic laboratories, imaging centers, and outpatient care centers. Opportunities in the field of Radiologic Technology are very favorable, as reports indicate that it is difficult to find enough well-prepared technicians to fill the number of positions available.

Cat Health Advice - A Simple Yet Effective Three Step Plan For Your Cat's Health and Longevity

Are you looking for some good, reliable cat health advice? Are you interested in knowing the secrets of keeping a pet cat healthy and happy? Do you want to know how you can improve your cat's health significantly by making small changes in its lifestyle? If you answered 'yes' to any of these questions, make sure you read this article fully. In the next few minutes, you will learn about a simple yet effective three-step plan for cat health and longevity. Now that you are ready, let us get started with the article.

Food

The importance of a well balanced diet for cats simply cannot be stressed enough. A lot of cat owners, feed a home made or raw diet and find that their cat develops a number of issues. The reasons is not that these types of diets are bad, its just that veterinary medicine has identified 40 nutritional components that are essential.

Commercial foods or cat raw food diets, when formulated to balance these 40 nutrients, are very helpful to maintain feline health. Either one is fine as long as the following criteria are met:

- If purchasing a raw diet, make sure the label reads "this food has been proven to be nutritionally complete or adequate for all life stages." If it doesn't specifically say this, it is not a complete diet and should be avoided or only used as a dietary supplement. If you want to make a diet at home, work with a veterinary nutritionist, since in almost all cases, supplements are needed to provide nutritional components not available in most food ingredients.

- If you prefer a commercial diet, make sure that the diet is AAFCO certified, canned, and specifically states that it was "tested and found to be adequate." Preferably the pet food should contain human grade ingredients. If you can't find one, then purchase a veterinary grade cat food such as Science Diet or a premium cat food found in any pet or grocery store. If you are living on a tight budget, buying a cat food in a discount store is fine, as long as it meets the AAFCO certification mentioned.

Water

Cats are reluctant water drinkers. They prefer to get their moisture through food, which is why canned food is preferred to dry. To encourage drinking, use a high quality water source (tap is fine if high quality). Many owners use filtered water. Give your cat what you give to yourself.

Providing an extra water dish in an area of the house your cat likes to rest will also encourage drinking.

Water encourages urination, which is natures way of keeping the urinary tract clean.

Health supplements

Have you ever wondered how animals in the wild stay so healthy? The secret is that they eat certain medicinal herbs to eliminate the toxins and cleanse their system periodically. It recharges their system, improves their metabolism, boosts their immune system, and makes them healthier. What is interesting is that your cat would do the exact same thing if allowed to roam free in the wild. Unfortunately, it does not have access to these herbs. It leads to a toxin buildup in its body, which affects its health adversely.

To avoid this problem, consider giving your cat a regular dose of these medicinal herbs in the form of an herbal supplement. You can choose a high quality herbal supplement that contains powerful herbs like mistletoe, milk thistle, huang qi, cat's claw, and ashwagandha and make it a part of your cat's diet. It is the most effective way to improve your cat's health naturally.

The three-step plan, as you can see, focuses on three important factors - food, water, and supplements. These are the factors that play a major role in your cat's health and longevity. So, understand your cat's needs, know what is beneficial and what is harmful to its health, follow the cat health advice given above, and take good care of your furry friend.

Six Uses For Shredded Paper

Paper shredders are a great way to ensure that no one will able to steal your private information. But what do you do with the paper once it's been run through the machine? This article will list what you can do, ranging from the practical (recycling) to the whimsical (Easter basket filling). Keep reading to discover what you can do with your shredded paper.

1.) Recycle! Obviously, the first thing you can do with your shreds is recycle them. This not only gets the waste out of your house, it ensures that you're doing your part to save the environment. Just be sure to check with your local recycling facility to see if your paper bits can be mixed with other items, such as shredded CD's, credit cards, and floppy disks.

2.) Packing material. This is a great way to re-use your shredded documents, especially if you've been cleaning out your office before a big move. After all, commercial moving supplies are expensive, especially when you consider that they'll probably just be tossed after you're settled in. If you use your shreds, you won't pay anything for packing material, your old documents will be no more, and your fragile items should arrive at their destination without breaking. It's a win-win situation all around.

3.) Pet bedding and kitty litter. If you have pets, they can certainly reap the benefits of your having a shredder. Shreds can be used to line pet cages, especially those belonging to birds, mice, gerbils, hamsters, and other small critters. Rodents love to burrow and they'll love having fresh material in which to do so. You can even use your shreds to line your cat's litter box. (Just be aware that your kitty might not take to the new litter right away. Cats tend to be picky when it comes to their litter boxes especially if the type of litter is suddenly changed.) A word of advice: you should make sure the paper you use is free of shredder oil and toxic ink, especially since rodents love to chew on their bedding. (And cats have been known to lick weird things.) The goal here is to make your furry friends happy, not make them sick.

4.) Gift bags. When it comes time to give that perfect gift, it's always nice to present it in the best way possible. If you're using a gift bag, you can fill up the empty space with bits from your shredder. This would look especially nice if the paper was colorful. You can even use the shreds to pad the box your gift is in. This will not only make your gift look great, it will help you save money since you won't be blowing cash on overpriced products from the greeting card store.

5.) Easter basket filling. If you have kids and they still believe in the Easter bunny, why not run some colorful paper through your shredder and use it to line Easter baskets? It's a great way to both please the little ones and recycle stuff that would other wise go in the garbage.

6.) Confetti. Confetti is another one of those items that comes in very handy at certain times (i.e. weddings), but it's probably also something you don't want to spend a fortune on. If you have a cross-/confetti-cut shredder, it's incredibly easy to make your own confetti. You can even make sure it's the right color and not have to rely on what's available at the store.

These are just a few of the things you can do with shredded paper. If you use your imagination, you're bound to come up with some more ideas. Good luck and happy shredding!

Careers With Animals

So, you want to work with animals, do you? How is your education? You need at least a high school diploma to get into most programs. If you don't have a diploma, but have your GED, you can still do most veterinary work. Even animal grooming needs a certification - and many of these careers need licensing as well. For veterinary college you will need the high school diploma and college - lots of college!

Everyone, no matter what program they pursue, needs to know the business of running a practice. Whether that's a veteinary practice or as a pet groomer, you need to be able to reconcile your checking accounts, make appointments and deal with customers. In most places, a little selling is desirable - up-sell to the next size food or adding on an in-between grooming treatment, for instance. If you can master bookkeeping, so much the better. Perhaps running the office will be in your future.

Different careers with animals include certified trainers, veterinary assistants or technicians, holistic animal practitioners and veterinarians. There are also groomers, petsitters and others who work with animals in various capacities. Did you know that many employees of your local animal shelter need to be certified veterinary technicians?

What about veterinarian itself? What does a veterinarian make? How much education is needed and how hard is it? I heard it's easier to become a human doctor than a veterinarian, is that possible?

How much does the education cost for these careers? Is there anything you can do without going to an expensive school? How much will you make when you complete the program and finally get to go to work? What is the outlook for these careers? Will there still be a position for you in 5 years? What about 10 years? All this and more is covered in this lengthy piece, Careers with Animals.

For the Love of Cats is a place for people facing difficulties in their relationships with cats to come and find the answers they need from someone they can trust.

Ice Breaker Bingo

At the start of a school year, or in an event such as seminar or workshop, it can be helpful for the teacher or organizer to find a fun activity that will facilitate introductions. One such activity that is definitely worth considering is the game of ice breaker bingo. Ice breaker bingo is in reality at least two different games - both variants of the classic game of bingo, and the teacher or organizer should select the most appropriate version of ice breaker bingo depending on the age, confidence level and English-language skills of the players (or students).

1. In both versions of the game, each player is given their own bingo card. The objective of the game is to be the first player to achieve a line of five marked off items on your card, whether that line is horizontal, vertical or diagonal.

2. In the simpler version of ice breaker bingo, the bingo cards contain the names of members of the group - a different name in each square. What happens is the teacher (or organizer) goes around the group asking people to stand up one at a time, telling the others a little bit about themselves, and finish by stating their name. The other players can then mark that name off their card, and the first player to achieve a line of five can call a bingo - however their bingo only counts if they can correctly identify the people corresponding to each of the names in their winning line.

3. In the more complex version of the game, the squares of the bingo cards are printed with descriptions or activities (e.g. "owns a cat", "can play piano", "is a vegetarian"). The players then circulate among themselves trying to find others who match these descriptions, and, when they find a match, they write that person's name in the square. The catch is that each name may only be used once per card, and that of course encourages the players to meet and talk with as many other members of the group as they can.

The Awful Deadly Truth About Steroid Use For Dogs

Is your dog taking steroids for any conditions such as allergies, immune diseases, inflammation from arthritis, stomach and intestinal inflammation, or a host of other problems for which steroids are given to our pets?

Dangerous Side Effects

Are you aware of the awful side effects these drugs can cause, sometimes turning deadly?  The most frequent side effect in dogs is increased thirst. Side effects of anti-inflammatory steroids can be numerous.  In dogs and less often in cats, the most commonly seen side effects include an increase in thirst and appetite, followed by an increase in urine production, and possible weight gain.  Glucocorticoid drugs (steroids with the big name) have an effect the body defenses, such that dogs that are taking these medications at higher doses, especially those on longer-term prescriptions can develop infections more easily. This can lead to conditions such as cystitis (bladder infection), whereby bacteria infect the bladder lining, and the irritation resulting from this can lead to an urge to go that can come on suddenly and leave no time to gracefully exit to the yard for a proper urination.

Other very common side effects of glucocorticoid drugs are panting and weight gain. Less common are side effects on the liver and adrenal glands. The potential for liver and adrenal changes are well-recognized.  Sometimes mood alterations can occur.  These mood changes may make the dog irritable and sometimes can result in a "nice" dog suddenly snapping at its owners.

Long term usage of steroids (usually over a period of months), may induce internal changes to the patients body, resulting in an over-production of the patient's cortisol (patient's own body steroid) production.  This condition, known as Cushing's disease, can necessitate the need for specific treatment. Skin lesions can occur in pets with over-production of cortisol, which can result in hair loss, or red, angry, patches of skin which form scabs over time, or result in a thickening of the skin in the affected area.

Some of the more commonly used drugs of this class include Prednisone, Prednisolone, Medrol, Dexamethasone, and Triamcinolone.

Usdi's Story

We are reminded of the story of Usdi, a beautiful beagle, who lived for only nine years, when she should have lived much longer.  This unfortunate dog was the victim of overuse of steroids. Usdi developed skin allergies.  She was first taken to the vet with this problem at about age 2.  It was a continuing problem for her.  And she was routinely given Vetalog - a steroid - over the next 7 years.  By the time Usdi had passed the point of no return, she was suffering not only from Diabetes, but breathing difficulties, heart disease, unexplained weight gain, probably kidney and liver failure and possibly Cushings disease.

It is not uncommon for steroids to be given for dogs, and in particular skin allergies are often treated with steroids.  The use of steroids should be questioned.  They can, and do, cause a multitude of side effect - including causing Cushing's Disease in dogs, and Diabetes in both humans and dogs.  Steroids are occasionally necessary - but never safe.  There certainly are situations where steroids have saved lives in cases of acute illness of various types.  But they're given out far, far too readily, for all manner of illnesses.
