Massage Techniques - Soothing the Mind and Body

Massage techniques are used to alleviate stress and optimize health. From spas to parlors, they are the key to ensure a soothing and comfortable experience. From deep tissue to back massages, these techniques are widely utilized throughout the world. There are licensed professionals, who must attain certification to effectively ply their trade. There are also novices who implement the skills to gain full relaxation. These skills are acquired, and must be properly performed to achieve desired results. From the right pressure points to skin issues, a qualified practitioner will know what areas to target for maximum results. There are countless massage classes that can teach you the hidden secrets of massage therapy. Several schools also teach the areas that are susceptible to pain and should be avoided.

These areas include shoulder and spine points. Once these massage techniques are mastered, you must find an acceptable venue. A bedroom or lounge area is perfect for setting up the massage. The masseur or novice can also utilize special lotions and creams. A serene environment is also needed to ensure proper relaxation. If a massage table is not present, using thick blankets on a carpeted floor can also work. The receiver should also have pillows tucked under the chin and legs. In addition, make sure the client can breathe properly. The airflow is highly important, since most receivers are placed on their stomachs. A towel under the belly is also a great way to relax and easily breathe. The lighting should be dim to set the mood. Some massage therapists also integrate soft music, to capture the allure and essence of the environment.

Once the proper setting is achieved, the masseur will utilize a wide array of massage techniques. This may include basic or advanced steps. The massage usually begins with a few different strokes to test compatibility. It is important for the receiver to also be vocal. This will let the practitioner know what feels good, and what does not. After the initial strokes, kneading and pressure point exercises commence. This is where the masseur begins to target troubled and sensitive areas. These body massage techniques are an integral part of securing a favorable outcome. The application of these skills can eliminate bodily pain, while concentrating on stiff areas and stress points. A number of styles are also implemented to see what the client likes.

One particular style is known as fan stroking. This massage technique is very popular and targets the back. Other styles include circular stroking, thumb stroking, and cat stroking. This offers a sensual touch to the body, and helps relax the receiver. This can even lead to the client falling asleep. It is important, however, to remain alert and professional at all times. The client may want you to target a specific area, as opposed to a whole body massage. Knuckling is also the perfect way to loosen the backs and legs. No matter the receiver's preference, it is imperative to master as many skills as possible. For professionals, it can mean more revenue and market appeal. For non-professionals, it can mean a healthier and productive lifestyle.

There are several different massage techniques you could use yourself on your loved ones, or if you are looking to start your own business. Starting from the basics of body massage and working your way up is the key to success.

Local Vet - Finding a Veterinarian

Your local vet is a physician for animals and a practitioner of veterinary medicine. Vets working on clinical settings often practice medicine in a limited field such as pet medicine, production medicine, or livestock medicine. A veterinarian specializing in production medicine is an expert in dairy cattle, beef cattle, swine, sheep, poultry, and equine. Veterinarians may also choose to specialize in medical disciplines such as surgery, dermatology, or internal medicine, after postgraduate training and certification. Finding a local vet nearest you is easy with a vet directory.

Some veterinarians pursue postgraduate training, enter research centers, and contribute in advances in many human and veterinary medical fields, which include pharmacology and epidemiology. Moreover, legendary vets were in the forefront in the effort to suppress malaria and yellow fever in the United States. They were the ones who were determined in discovering the identity of the botulism disease-causing agent, produced an anti-coagulant that is used to treat human heart disease, and developed surgical techniques for humans such as hip-joint replacement, limb, and organ transplants.

Like physicians, veterinarians must make serious ethical decisions about their patient's care. There is an on-going debate within the profession over the ethics of declawing cats, docking or cropping of tails and ears, spaying or neutering dogs, debarking dogs, housing of sows in gestation crates, and housing egg-laying poultry hens in cages. Some of them use their skills to protect humans against diseases carried by animals and conduct clinical research on human and animal health problems.

Other vets work in basic research, broadening our knowledge of animals, as well as medical science and applied research, developing new ways to use that knowledge. They do not only diagnose animal health problems and vaccinate against diseases, but they also medicate animals suffering from infections or illnesses by treating and dressing animal wounds, setting fractures, performing surgery, and giving advice to owners about animal feeding, behavior, and breeding. They may also work with food animals and/or horses, and usually drive to ranches and farms to provide veterinary services to herds or individual animals.

Veterinarians can also perform caesarian sections on birthing animals. Others care for zoo, aquarium, or laboratory animals. When they treat animals, they use medical equipment such as stethoscopes, surgical instruments, and diagnostic tools, which include radiographic and ultrasound equipment.

Vets who are working in research, use a full range of sophisticated laboratory equipment. In addition to this, some are involved in food safety and inspection. Those who work as livestock inspectors, check animals for transmissible diseases such as E.coli, advise owners on the treatment of their animals, and may quarantine animals. There are those who also examine slaughtering and processing plants, check live animals and carcasses for diseases, and enforce government regulations regarding food purity and sanitation.

More vets are finding opportunities in food security as they ensure that the nation has abundant and safe food supplies. Those involved in food security often work along the country's borders as animal and plant health inspectors, where they examine imports and exports of animal products to prevent disease here and in other foreign countries. Many of these workers are employed by the Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service Division or the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Center for Veterinary Medicine.

Veterinarians in private or clinical practice often work long hours in a noisy indoor environment. Sometimes they have to even deal with emotional or demanding pet owners. When working with animals that are frightened or in pain, vets even risk being bitten, kicked or scratched.

Seven Mistakes Pet Parents Make

Impulse Buying

Making the commitment to invite any animal to join your family should take a lot of careful consideration. Unfortunately, for many people when they see a cute animal they can't resist the temptation of bringing them home immediately. However, it is much wiser to first go home and do some research to find out everything you can about this particular type of pet and what caring for and living with them will entail. Also, be sure to include all family members in the decisionmaking process. Carefully consider the commitment of time and money, and if this particular animal is a good match for your family.

Buying From a Pet Store

This can be a hard mistake for people to avoid as seeing a cute young animal in a store can be very tempting especially since some people might consider they are saving that particular animal. But, keep in mind that while you may give that animal a good home with each sale the pet store makes they are that much more likely to simply bring more animals in from animal mills where the breeding stock is subjected to a life of constant breeding and probable mistreatment.

Killing with Kindness

Because people love their pets so much they often give too much too soon to the detriment of their pets. Many people feel they are being mean if they don't give their pet everything they want when they want it. A perfect example of this is the person who brings home a new dog or cat and let's them run freely in the home. But, it is much kinder in the long run to set clear rules and boundaries, much like with kids, to help your pet stay safe and ensure that he or she is with you for their whole life. Unfortunately, the result of not setting boundaries and helping your pet learn how to behave is that they make mistakes which they are then punished for and many otherwise lovely animals are surrendered to shelters for simple to prevent and resolve behavior problems.

Assuming Your Pet is a Person in Fur Clothing

It's wonderful that most people adopt pets into their home as full-fledged members of the family. However, while most pets adapt incredibly well to living with people, many people forget they are still animals. Keep in mind that pets tend to think in different and often much simpler terms than we do. They aren't walking around all day plotting how to get back at you for leaving them at home while you go to work or to punish you for what you have or haven't done for them lately. I often hear people say they think their pet is spiteful or stubborn. This way of thinking does a great disservice to pets and tends to create a relationship where we set our pets up to fail by assuming they should know how to behave.

Punishing Your Pet

Considering how much we love our animal companions it is odd that one of the big mistakes people make is focusing on punishing our pets for things they do we don't like rather than rewarding them for what we consider good behavior. A perfect example of this is letting a pup eliminate on the rug (by not supervising them properly) and then yelling at them for doing so. Dogs think it pretty simple terms, so it is unlikely they are thinking they are in trouble for going in the house. They are probably simply thinking they need to hide behind the couch next time they need to go since you obviously don't like to see them do it. Also, punishments are likely to damage your relationship with your pet whereas managing your pets to set them up for success and rewarding for good behavior will create a well-mannered pet and improve your bond.

Not Spaying or Neutering

This is a common mistake pet parents make with some of the most serious consequences. Unfortunately some people still think that if they spay or neuter their pets they will get lazy and fat that it is kind to let their pet have just one litter. Aside from the fact that there is a serious pet overpopulation problem which spaying and neutering can help decrease, doing so also means your companion is less likely to look for a mate which means they are less likely to get lost, hurt or contract diseases.

For males, neutering eliminates the chance of developing testicular cancer and may reduce problems with territorial and sexual aggression as well as decreasing inappropriate urination issues. For females, spaying decreases the chance of developing breast cancer. In fact, the rate goes down to almost zero if the spaying is done before the first heat cycle. It also eliminates the chance of developing a serious and potentially fatal infection of the uterus called pyometra. It also decreases or eliminates the mood swings associated with heat cycles and eliminates messy spotting.

Overall spaying and neutering will greatly increase the length and quality of your pet's life.

Leaving Pets & Children Alone

While many animals are very tolerant of and even enjoy interaction with children, all animals should be supervised at all times when together. No matter what breed or type of animal you have there is always a risk leaving children and pets unattended together. What many people don't understand is that an animal can be tolerant for years, but if pushed too far (i.e. rough play, over excited behavior) they may react. Unfortunately, the most likely person to be bitten or scratched by a dog or cat is family members.

The Challenge of Training a Border Collie

Herding cats isn't easy! If you don't believe me, you can ask my border collie, Jake. We live on a ranch, so Jake is a working dog. He has a JOB. When the cows need to be herded from point A to point B, it is Jake's job to get them there. Jake loves his job, and he is really good at it. He wouldn't dream of playing with the cows - that is his work - but Jake is a border collie, and border collies are born with a natural herding instinct. So, Jake herds the cats (or tries to) just for fun. He hasn't had a lot of luck with that yet, but he will never give up.

Training a border collie, regardless of the popular opinion, isn't easy. It isn't difficult to train a border collie because they are dumb. Border collies are anything BUT dumb! No, the problems that arise when training a border collie are because they are just TOO smart. A border collie WANTS to obey his master. He wants to do exactly what his master wants him to do. But there are problems training border collies because the trainer can send mixed signals without even realizing it.

For example: You can teach a border collie to sit on command in only two or three tries. But then the next time you give him the command to "sit," he will look at you for further instruction. Why? Because you raised your arm in a different way or used a different tone of voice when you gave the command, so he thinks this is a different command. He needs to figure out what you want him to do. Consistency is the key to training a border collie. You must use the same commands (both voice and hand signals) in exactly and precisely the very same way every single time.

Curiosity Doesn't Kill the Cat - Questions to Ask During an Interview

After you have submitted your application letter to your desired company to work for, you are most probably waiting for them to call you for an interview. And once you are lucky enough to hear that magical "ring" on your phone, with someone on the other end asking you to drop by their office for an initial interview - you suddenly ask yourself: "What's next?" Well, aside from preparing for your best looking outfit and conditioning your mind to "feel" your best, you may need to prepare yourself by thinking of questions to ask during an interview.

Not The Time to be Spontaneous

Although being spontaneous is a good thing, because you would give an impression that you are bubbly and perky, you might want to prepare your questions to ask an employer in an interview so that you will come off as smooth, prepared, and well-composed. If you are not prepared with your questions to ask during an interview, you might as well not ask because it might end up badly causing you to lose the position.

Brainstorming

To come up with effective and catchy questions to ask an employer in an interview, you have to have a good background of the company that you are applying for. If you are not very familiar with the company that you are applying for, it would be best if you research about it - its background, history, operations, etc. That way, you can formulate questions that are relevant and can strike an impact (a good one) to your employer.

Asking the Right Questions at the Right Time

Assuming that you are already prepared with questions to ask during an interview, you just can't blurt out your questions in the middle of the interview. You have to know the perfect timing to ask a specific question or else you might make your potential employer think that you are a scatterbrain. Try to feel the conversation first and be alert and witty enough to know when to ask your questions. That way, your interview with your potential employer will go smoothly. Anyway, you are always given the change to ask after each interview so you'd better grab that opportunity.

Knowing what questions to ask during an interview will not only give you an edge among the other applicants (especially if your questions are interesting and relevant), but it will also give your potential employer an impression that you are interested in learning more about the company as well as envisioning yourself working in that company in the future.

Independent Food Testing Laboratories

Currently, even the best commercial independent food testing laboratories cannot rule out bio-terrorism from taking place in our food products. Any requests for identification tests regarding this can be directed to public or state health laboratories. Most of these laboratories make up the Association of Public Health Laboratories and are also part of the National Laboratory Response Network (LRN). This network of state and public laboratories is a well-designed system that links these laboratories with highly advanced and bio-safety facilities so that they may provide surge capacity in the event of bio-terrorism.

State and public health laboratories are also a part of the Food Emergency Response Network (FERN). This is a newly formed organ which is responsible for carrying out different coordinating methodologies and offering training programs and facilities that enable the identification of biological, radiological and chemical contaminants that can be found in food products. This organ is a result of joint efforts between government agencies; mainly the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Department of Agriculture (DA), and various Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). FERN was designed and implemented in order to enhance different capabilities for assessing various bio-security threats and responding to them.

Participating facilities include national and regional government laboratories that fall under the jurisdiction of the FDA, DA, the Department of Energy, the Environmental Protection Agency, State Public Health, agricultural and veterinary laboratories, county health laboratories and university laboratories.

Choosing an Independent Laboratory

Companies that require chemical or microbiological testing on their food products can use various independent food testing laboratories. The information below will help in choosing the right laboratory for food testing.

When choosing a laboratory, companies should send their officials to get information on that particular laboratory's credentials. They should check for credentials such as ISO certifications. Other certifications may also be important, such as the FDA Interstate Milk Shippers Program. Together with their active participation in testing activity, they may be a display of proficiency such as that which is approved by the Association of Analytical Communities.

Using any of the above mentioned methods will aid in choosing an independent laboratory. This can assist in achieving the most accurate results possible.

Become a Dog Groomer

If you love dogs, are patient, and have ever had any interest in being a beautician, becoming a dog groomer might be a good career. You can not just hang out a shingle one day and declare you're a dog groomer, though. Here's how to get started, and how to tell if you really are cut out to wield a dog brush full time.

You Need to Have a Long-Term Love for Dogs - and People

Grooming can be difficult. You are not going to see the best side of all the dogs you will be working on. To be happy in your new career, you will need to love dogs enough that you can get through an eight hour day, five days a week, being covered in pet hair, getting growled at, and (this is the hard part for some groomers) putting some of the dogs you see through an frightening experience. But if you have a good history with dogs, and if you have had success working with problem dogs, even if it was not as a professional dog trainer, then you could be suited to this work.

Most dog groomers will tell you the people give them more trouble than the dogs. You will have to have good people skills to be successful. You are in a service business and that means you will be dealing with everyone who walks in the door. If you just want to be a dog groomer, and not a business owner, your people skills will not be required as much, but you will still be dealing with the public. That said, if you ever had a service job, even as a teenager, you've probably gotten a taste of what it takes, and you'll probably be fine.

By the way - you should also like cats. Some cats are sent in to be cleaned up almost as often as dogs are, and depending on the cat they can be much more difficult to groom.

Get Training

You will have to be trained before you can start getting paid as a dog groomer. There are over a dozen online schools, but if you live in the city I highly suggest you try to find a brick and mortar school. Computers are great, but there is nothing like a real classroom experience, and that is especially true when you are learning a hands-on skill. Frankly, I have about as much faith in an dog groomer that's been trained online as I do in a human hair cutter that's been trained online. It might be a perfectly good school but I would prefer to have my hair cut by someone who learned in a real class, thank you.

Going to classes will also introduce you to other dog groomers, and you will learn as much from each other as you do from the teacher. It also gives you a great opportunity to network for jobs after you get your certification. Most certification courses take six to twelve months and cost anywhere from $600 to $2000. The more established schools may offer some scholarships or payment options.

One way to tell a good school from a mediocre one is what kind of placement opportunities they have after you have completed their course. Before you put down your money, you really should talk to at least five different professional dog groomers and see what they think of the school you are about to attend. All careers have their own communities, and you are going to be joining the dog grooming community. Find out which schools are considered good and which are not - before you are on the job interview and you find out most groomers just laugh at the school you are considering.
