Achieving Great Success - You Must Stop Shaking Schrodinger's Cat

For anyone unfamiliar with the Schrodinger experiment, the hypothetical model of "Schrodinger's Cat" is a thought experiment, commonly described as a paradox, which was originally devised by the Austrian physicist Erwin Schrodinger in 1935. Schrodinger hypothesized the idea of "All Possibilities" can be summarized using an imagined set of conditions involving a cat, a sealed box, and a vile of hydrocyanic acid.

The Theory

For the purposes of this article, I'll give you a very quick and simplified explanation (from a behaviorist perspective) of the experiment: if you seal a cat, along with a vile of hydrocyanic acid, into a box which you have no perceptual access to (visually, auditorally, kinesthetically, etc.) then quantum mechanics would say that they cat is in a suspended state of being both alive and dead at the same time. How it works is that, if you have no way of knowing what's happened within the box then you have no way to tell if the vile has been broken or not... if it has, the cat is dead, but if it hasn't then the cat is still alive. Until you open the box and check there is no way to know with certainty -- and this means that all possibilities must exist at the same time... also referred to as a "Quantum Superposition".

The Application

Now, the same theory applies to achievable goal setting -- if you set a goal and work towards it, no matter what you do there is no way to be absolutely certain of what the results will be... thus, all possibilities of success and failure must exists at the same time. This is where most people have an issue -- not because they can't perceive the existence of all possibilities be available at once; rather, most people don't like such a huge degree of uncertainty about the outcome. Subsequently, people will treat goal setting much like getting presents -- if you really, really want to know whether or not you got what you asked for then you'll need to shake the gift-box. Or, to explain it in different way, ask any professional baker or chef -- if you're baking a cake and you constantly open and close the oven every 15 seconds to see if it's finished, they'll all agree that you'll only end up ruining the cake.

Although it may be difficult, to achieve great success we must learn to control our need for control when working towards our dreams. This is the main reason people never strive to excel beyond their basic abilities -- if you only attempt to do the things that you know with certainty you'll succeed at, then you'll never get better or achieve more than you already have. However, for those of you with the confidence and drive to strive beyond your current limits, you too must learn to accept the fact you can't control all the variable of success and failure. When you're anxious about potentially failing, the act of constantly worrying is equivalent to shaking Schrodinger's cat... by shaking the box you are more likely to break the vile of cyanide and kill the cat and, in the same way, constantly worrying about failure will keep you from doing the things you need in order to succeed.

HUBZone Certification - What You Need to Know Before You Begin

HUBZone Certification

Getting your business HUBZone certified can help insure your businesses success. The HUBZone certification is available for startup businesses, however the firm will need at least one employee in order to satisfy requirement #3 below.

What are the criteria for HUBZone Certification?
1. 51% ownership by a US Citizen.
2. The Principle Office of the firm must be located within a HUBZone
3. At least 35% of the employees must live within a HUBZone
4. The firm must be classified by the SBA as a small business. (Small business size determinations separated into primary NAICS Code)

In submitting the initial application to the SBA no verification for any of the following information will be required. The SBA will follow up with the firm 90 days later and ask for follow up information regarding, how the firm is owned, a map showing the primary business location, utility bills showing the firm name in the HUBZone location, drivers licenses showing primary residence of firm employees, as well as other supporting documentation. Make sure you have made these determinations prior to submitting your firm's application.

There are other issues and considerations for firms moving into a HUBZone location. Your CCR Registration is the electronic platform for you HUBZone application. Therefore all information contained in the CCR Registration must accurately reflect the information within the HUBZone application or there will be a conflict created which could cause a denial. Another factor of consideration is that the D&B information on your business links directly into the CCR Registration so this information must be updated to reflect a firm having moved into a HUBZone with the new Principle Office.

The benefits to your business are the following:

1. 10% pricing preference on government contracts. The HUBZone firm is considered to have similar pricing to a non-HUBZone firm if the HUBZone firm is charging $110 and the non-HUBZone firm is charging $100.
2. Large Companies bidding on Federal Contracts are required to show how they are including HUBZone companies as part of the contracts that are greater than $550,000.
3. The SBA has programs set up to help HUBZone firms with additional Bonding for Construction firms as well as aid in special SBA financial loans and resources.
There are also other intricacies to the HUBZone process such as if a county in a state has greater than 140% of the unemployment rate for the rest of the state then the county is considered to be HUBZone and all firms in that country can apply for HUBZone status. If a business is located as part of an Indian Reservation the firm can have less than 35% of the worker living in a HUBZone until such time as the firm is going to perform on a government contract and at that time the firm needs to become compliant with the 35% residence rule.

The Business Meal

Meetings or interviews at a suggested restaurant can be very different from a general interview or meeting in an office environment. There are certain rules and etiquette one needs to acquire and have knowledge of before making a fool of yourself to a potential boss or investors. The first and most important rule of them all, get there early! This will help get comfortable and relax whilst you wait.

Most interviews generally take place in an office environment whilst other interviewers like to conduct their interviews by arranging a business meal. The environment has now changed and there are some key points you need to remember in these situations. Your manner and how you as a whole person conduct yourself in society will be closely observed and scrutinized. You don't want to order too much food or drink as this can reflect a lack of self discipline which will question your maturity and judgment. The manner in which you talk and interact with the people around you i.e. waiters, business people portrays your approach to your subordinates and determines the strength of your leadership skills. If you are rude, obviously this will have a negative result on these two areas.

Try avoiding alcohol at all costs as alcohol will affect your mind and judgment. If you do however have alcohol, never order more than one glass. Water is the better choice unless your interviewer is ordering alcohol and insists you join him/her,.

If your interviewer is a smoker, you can join them if he/she lights up, otherwise smoking isn't a good idea especially during the meal.

Stay far away from messy foods and foods that contain bones. Never ever talk with your mouth full or chew you food with your mouth open as this will put your interviewer off considerably as well as giving them an indication of your lack of manners. Never order expensive dishes, rather order what your interviewer is having and never send the food back or change an order after it has been placed.

At the end of the meal when your table is presented with the bill, leave it alone. The interviewer has to pay the bill and never offer to pay your share. After the bill has been paid, thank your host for the great meal.

Fun Family Food Frolics

When was the last time your kids got excited about a meal, unless they were asked if they wanted fries with that? Fun family eating doesn't have to happen outside the home. You can serve it up quick and easy, and so can the kids!

Ask yourself when was the last time you had fun with food. Was it the one-year birthday cake when you smooshed it into your face, and your parents saved that photo to show off at your wedding? Or was it the hot dog eating contest that was going really well until you discovered the dog had eaten the rest of the hot dogs and left them on the kitchen floor? Both those were fun family events, although maybe not for the dog. What made it fun? Not the food itself, but what you did with it.

One of the best ways to get kids to eat, and to enjoy foods, is to teach them how to make it. Toddlers of three and four years old love to help Mom in the kitchen, and if coached, can be very adept at putting sprinkles on cookies, or making faces on them with raisins. Raw vegetables can be peeled and cut up by older children who can choose a dip to serve with them. You'll be surprised how much actually gets eaten during the preparation, when the same child won't sit down and eat them at the table. Not only is it a way to get the work done and the food into reluctant eaters, it's a great time to talk to kids when you're both relaxed and have a focus other than homework or chores.

All it takes to put some giggles in your goulash is a little thought and a willingness to "go with the flow".
